New London— New London without the Coast Guard is like a cone without ice cream.

That message was written on one of the Valentine's Day cards presented to local Coast Guardsmen today on board the barque Eagle. It was the last event for the "New London Loves USCG" campaign. Local school children and residents filled out the cards.

Mayor Daryl Justin Finizio, on his first visit to the barque, said the Coast Guard is the "gem of our city and nation."

Capt. Eric C. Jones, commanding officer of the Eagle, was given red roses.

"We definitely feel the love," he said, before leading a tour for the city residents and business owners involved in the campaign.

Barbara Neff and Stephanie Gregerman said after that the campaign accomplished exactly what they hoped it would— it got the message out that the city truly values the Coast Guard.

Politics

Why not? Please explain to a zoomie.

Because New London is not like Colorado Springs. New London is a town which generally dislikes cadets, generally dislikes the Academy and only "like" us when it's politically convenient to do so. It's a dilapidated run-down town with little to nothing to do and I will NEVER claim that I graduated from New London.

I will have graduated from the United States Coast Guard Academy, a fact that I will be proud of.

I hear the best summer assignment is right here at small boat station New London.

I was under the impression that Colorado Springs also does not like US Air Force Academy. At least, some parts of Colorado Springs do. I don't understand why New London would dislike cadets, especially when it's the cadets that will be the future leaders of this country.

I went to VMI, and the town of Lexington wasn't thrilled with us. It's a tiny little town, but they certainly did not seem to be the greatest fans of our cadets or of the students at Washington and Lee University. The relationship between USCGA and New London sounds similar.

I grew up in Annapolis and live there now. As a "townie," I can say that Naptown loves it some USNA. There may be a few odd-balls, but for the most part, there is a great relationship.

Yeah, same sort of reaction... except NL loves Conn College... and Conn College hates us.
