U.S. Coast Guard announces the Cutter Eagle’s 2011 summer deployment schedule

NEW LONDON, Conn. — The U.S. Coast Guard announced Tuesday the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Eagle’s 2011 summer training deployment to Northern Europe, Iceland, Canada and the northeastern United States.

Celebrating the 75th anniversary of its 1936 construction at Blohm and Voss Shipyard in Hamburg, Germany, the Eagle will sail from its New London home port on May 7, 2011, to visit the following international and domestic ports in conjunction with its training mission:

  • Waterford, Ireland, May 27 to 30;
  • Hamburg, Germany, June 3 to 6;
  • London, England, June 10 to 13;
  • Reykjavik, Iceland, June 24 to 27;
  • Halifax, Nova Scotia, July 15 to 18;
  • Boston, Mass., July 22 to 25;
  • New Bedford, Mass., July 29 to Aug. 1;
  • New York, N.Y., Aug. 5 to 8

“This is a great opportunity to tie the Eagle's rich history directly into the annual cadet summer training at sea,” said Capt. Eric C. Jones, the Eagle’s commanding officer. “By the time the ship arrives in Hamburg, the cadets will have shared in an experience that the Coast Guard Academy has shared with prospective officers for 65 years - learning to live and work on the ocean aboard a tall ship.”

The Eagle is the largest tall ship flying the United States flag and the only active square-rigger in U.S. government service. A three-masted barque, the Eagle provides an unparalleled at-sea leadership and professional development experience for future officers of the U.S. Coast Guard. A permanent crew of six officers and 49 enlisted personnel guides the trainees through a rigorous underway and in-port training curriculum dedicated to the skills of navigation, damage control, watchstanding, engineering and deck seamanship.

:cool:

U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Eagle’s 2011

The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Eagle’s 2011 sounds like an excellent training deployment opportunity for the cadets. Just curious, what date(s) are the 2011 swabs scheduled for on their first USCGA Eagle adventure.

Looks like the Phase 1 swabs of 2015 will embark in Boston and sail to New Bedford, Phase 2 will embark in New Bedford and sail to New York, and Phase 3 will embark in NY and sail her back to New London.

My guess is that Class of 2014 3/c Phase 1 will fly to Ireland and sail to Germany and to London, and Phase 2 will sail from London to Rekjavik to Nova Scotia.

A very nice itinerary indeed!

Not too shabby of a summer assignment if you ask me. My son is currently a 4/c Cadet and, needless to say is very excited about this schedule. He doesn't know too many of his HS classmates who will get the opportunity to sail on Eagle for 5 weeks, tour Europe, AND represent their country!!

A Proud Mom of a 2014 USCGA Cadet

Just a note with summer training starting on May 7th I would think the phase 1 for the class of 2014 will leave from New London

The first people to go out on Eagle are the OCS types. They will likely sail from NL to UK where the 3/cs will take over.:biggrin:

that's only because OCS has had such a rough time at summer camp and wants to burn some vacation. :wink:

The last 3 year on the 1st day of summer training half the 3c went to Phase 1 Eagle. So I guess it has changed?

I believe you are correct, as what would the (almost) 3/c's do from 7 May until 27 May?

This would be the best scenario as both phases would get to experience a full Atlantic crossing.

Hopefully the wind will cooperate better than it did during 2012's Atlantic crossing (Cassis to Bermuda) - I heard a LOT of fuel was used and they barely made it to St George's Harbour.

Swabs & Eagle

When will the swabs be on the eagle this year and where is it going?

Looking at the schedule and based on the past, the first phase will get on the Eagle in Halifax, second phase in Portland and third in Newpost.

That should be correct but be aware that the scheduled order of companies may differ a bit this year :smile:

Nothing's certain yet but don't expect everything to stay the same this year as far as with previous years training schedules.

I'm a bit confused - if @proudmom is correct with her post in that phase 1 will get on in Halifax, what are the other times from April to July 10th? Is that part of a 3/C's training?

This should have an updated title, I'll start a new thread - mods please close this old one.

Swab Eagle

Going by past practice, proudmom is correct. Most of the Eagle's schedule is for 3/C but the last three weeks are the Swab phases. Swabs get one week on Eagle....which of the three weeks they get is determined by which company they are in. I'm curious, though, to hear STN '13 elaborate a little about potential changes. Is it safe to assume that swabs will still get the last three weeks but they might switch up the order in which the companies go?

That may or may not be something that's currently in the works. No definitive answers yet.:smile:
