I would really appreciate it if someone who really knows about the NWL to describe how individuals are selected from it - in general and specifically for the Class of 2016. It's kind of a gray area for me (no pun intended ) I understand that it's based on a person's WCS given the fact that they have been 3Q'd and have at least one nomination, but how exactly is the WCS calculated? Is there a cut-off point on the NWL? What will admissions be looking for? About how many will be selected from the list?

Thanks in advance!

See the Post from a few weeks ago marked "Got my NWL." It was posted by "quadthing."

It is long, but really covers everything there is to know about the NWL this year. Some moderators even posted on it.

I have really simplified a very complicated process but these are the basics.
You are one of about 1,700 people on the list. You are all nominated and 3Qd. You are ranked on the list somewhere between #1 and #1,700. You have until Feb 29th to provide information that could move you higher on the list. About 350-450 people on the list will get an offer. Therefore, how high you are ranked will basically determine if you get an offer.

Thank you BigNick!

Would you by chance know how the WCS is broken down? Can you also shed a little light on how soon one might here back from admissions for offers from the NWL.

Thanks again.

Some are already being notified. These are primarily the people who received LOAs. After the close of the records on February 29, the offer process will speed-up significantly. The Board meets (I believe) on Tuesday 6 March and Tuesday 20 March. This schedule can change depending on how quickly Admissions can complete their evaluation of the completed files. Most people will hear "up or down" by about mid-March to late-March. By the end of March about 90+% of the class will be filled. However, as a few people reject their offers (they have until May 1) people will be activated from the NWL.

@Nick - curious where you're getting your stats of 350-400 coming off the NWL this year? I know that was more the case 2+ years ago, but from what we're being told as FFR's, there will be very few off the NWL this year. My perception (totally my feeling) from our info has been probably double digits. They're shooting for a class size around 250 candidates less than 2014 was. I'd be glad to be proved wrong and give some additional hope to my candidates but for now I'm hearing that NWL appointments will be few and far between. Thanks for any clarification.

If I'm still not DoDMERB qualified by Feb 29th I still will able to get into the NWL right? If I get 3'Qed later on? I'm nom'ed.

From what I've heard is that you need to be 3'Qed and have a nom to be put on the NWL. Since Feb 28th is the drop dead I dont think they would put you on it since by then they will be ranking the candidates #1-1700. Since it is a medical DQ it may be different. Best advice would be to check with your FFR or RC. Hope it works out for you man.

Thanks, TheUnderdog. I'll give my Outreach Admissions Officer a call.

BTW, it's not a medical DQ - my medical exam is still to reach the DoDMERB itself (the HUGE delay happened for several reasons).

Oh gotcha, you should be fine then. Just check to confirm then:thumb: Good Luck!

A minimum of 150 must be activated from the NWL by law (Title 10)
Normally, approximately another 200 or so are activated (based on past few years). Since this class will be smaller, it probably will be less that that. I was told by an RC about a month ago that the total number from the NWL would be in the 250-350 + or - range. However, the info from the RCs is based on the situation at the time. Things change. There are many variables in this process so the REAL number is yet to be determined. It would be safe to say that people in the top quarter of the NWL have a chance - those in the bottom 3/4 of the list will probably not make it unless they are in the category of "balancing the class".

BigNick, does USMA have to see your 7th semester transcripts before deciding choosing to accept you or not? Also, it seems on the portal that the first admissible mail has been sent, could that be for NWL people?

Normally yes - they need the 7th Semester grades - however there are always exceptions. People are being given offers from the NWL - mostly the LOA people and other with very strong records. In March, the number of offers will increase significantly.

Thanks so much for the info BigNick! Also, how much do you think alumni will affect my decision? I have a brother currently at USMA right now.

All candidates (high school seniors) must send in their 7th semester transcript by 29 FEB.

This includes those who have been offered, accepted or those still waiting to hear.
If it is not in the mail right now - then fax or email to admissions.

Don't let this detail slip. :thumb:

SimonPark,
Officially, having a brother at West Point makes no difference in the selection process. However, in my opinion it can make a little positive difference to some people on the selection committee in the case of a tie between two people. However, I do not believe it is a measurable factor. I have seen cases of candidates turned-down whose fathers were West Point grads and a senior officers (Colonel or General) in the Army. You are going to make it or not on your own merits.

To All,
You are getting some very good advice on this Forum. However, remember that this is a complicated process with many moving parts. Few statements are true 100% of the time. Although the law is followed in the selection process 100%, there are many places in the process where exceptions to other rules are made and many places where the judgement of the Admissions Committee and the Members of Congress are in play. Therefore, all generalizations are untrue, including this one.

The thing about having to take 150 is that a lot of that 150 have already been taken. and like you said BigNick, they can have excemptions and such.

A minimum of 150 must be activated from the NWL by law (Title 10)

This is true, but it is also true that the candidates who received a LOA and weren't the vacancy winner of their region are taking up those spots, it helps the admissions team meet the NWL quota and get the candidates they really want.
