I got a letter regarding my DODMERB medical examination and they said that I failed, due to sleepwalking past the age of 15. When I took the examination, the doctor was worried about my not passing because of marking it, but she said that the two incidents were so minor that they shouldn't make a difference. I've since heard that any of the questions you answer "Yes" to will disquality you automatically, regardless of the individual cases. Is this something that I would have a good chance of getting a medical waiver for, assuming I got an appointment? Also, what steps do I need to take to start the process of getting a medical waiver? Thank you.

Actually this should probably go in the DODMERB section, my mistake

It seems this decision would be for your own protection. What if you were aboard a ship and you started sleep walking? You could fall overboard.

The two incidents where I sleep walked were over a year ago, and all I did was stand up and walk to my dorm room door, then walk back to bed. I understand that it could be dangerous if I was wandering, but with it being minor, and not happening in over a year, is there a possibility of a waiver?

Good luck with the waiver, but I would think that all of the sea services would be reluctant to waiver something like this, as noted above, for your own protection.

I know a cadet at USCGA was medically disenrolled a few years ago during swab summer, after sleepwalking and going missing from Chase Hall (they found him outside still asleep).

I can only speak for the Navy: sleepwalking is a big no-no. Unfortunately it just isn't safe to have someone with a history of sleepwalking in the service for many reasons (shipboard service being one.) In fact it is one of the things that will get people seperated from the service even after they are in.

I know that's not the news you want to hear, but in my opinion a waiver will be difficult. I would still apply though, but I would have a good back-up plan in place as well.

There are many excellent ROTC programs you could look into. Keep your chin up as you look into your waiver, but consider ROTC..Best of luck!

I'm not sure this route will work either. My friend got disqualified as well and lost a full-ride AFROTC scholarship due to sleepwalking.

I agree, this is a DoDMERB issue, and even the AF would say no way.

Well my application status says conditional. From the sounds of it a waiver will be a long shot, but hopefully I get one and I'll post what happens for anybody in a similar situation

Good luck to you!

jfish and sleepwalking

Hi jfish,
I noticed on the DoDMERB discussion group you posted the information about your status as of about a year ago. You indicated you would provide an update. However, I have not been able to find an update.
Can you please let me know what ended up happening?

The problem with old threads is that half of the people who posted are no longer active on these forums. jfish has not been here since 13th March 2012. You might try to contact jfish directly using the e-mail connection, but I would not expect a reply.
