Do I still keep my file up?

Well, unfortunately, I was not accepted to West Point this past month (Received QNS around the 10th) but I will be enrolling in ROTC at Cal Poly SLO this Fall. Since I was not admitted for the Class of 2016, can I simply keep my file open and thus roll it over for next year's process? Or, do I have to start all over again? Truth be told, I am still interested in attending WP even if it means a few years delay. But, I'm not sure it would be worth to start a 6 month (or longer) process all over again when I can reach the same spot doing ROTC.

Unfortunately, to my knowledge, you have to do the whole application process over again (noms, essays, forms). The only thing that carries over is the Dodmerb, as it is valid for two years. So you will most likely have to do the majority of the application again.

I only speak my experience with USAFA admissions though, as I am reapplying there. West Point might do things differently.

You can easily finish WP's application in a month though I would like to note. The only thing that really takes a bunch of time is logistics and for congress to make their noms selected. If you sit down during the summer and take care what you can, admissions should be a breeze. They really like people who finish apps early and those who reapply. You would have an extra edge by doing ROTC as they have noms you can get.

I am in ROTC right now for what its worth. Its a great program, with its own unique experience. Best of luck in your future endeavors.
 
Sorry to hear about your QNS letter. I suspect that a lot more will be going out. DS received one late in I believe April or may of last year. Sorta thought he had a chance but did receive a 4 year AROTC and applied again this year. His applicatoin has been complete except for first semester grades which as of this morning were not showing up and no one will tell us why.

DS had to resubmit essays and teacher evals but everything else popped up. His activites, SAT scores, GPA etc... Good luck and if you reapply its a bit harder with the constrants of ROTC so get it done early.
 
Yeah, tough times! Did your son use the same essays from las year as well as teachers? Thank you for your posts.
 
My son was in the same position last year - notified as QNS in April. He was crushed at first, went to Plan B and was doing very well at school. After some serious soul searching, he decided to re-apply in early September. We had copies of everything from his previous application. He did use much of the same information from last year. He did update a couple of his recs., but he used about 90% of the content from the previous years essay. They were well thought out, well written and his views did not change so updating his essays was pretty easy. You still have to go through the process of nomination applications and updating your school records but, if your son wants to re-apply the time to get everything in order should take about half the time. From start to finish, even with my son at college (800 miles away), he completed his candidate file in less than 3 months! He like many is in a holding pattern - 3Q and patiently waiting! I would recommend that you make a copy of as much of the data on the portal - just to assist you in your application next year!
 
Yes, I have kepted everything that I have submitted, so that should not be a problem. Hope your son gets into the Academy this time!!

DId your DS submit his first semester grades yet? My DS are not showing up on his portal.
 
I'm just curious fanatic. Does your portal have the message about the 1st admissable mailing? There was another thread where someone asked if the message was on all candidate portal's or not because he/she had not heard back yet and I'm curious to know as well. Sorry you didn't get in, but a year of ROTC should make you competitive next year, good luck!
 
For Re-Applicants:
Refer to page 8 of the 'Instructions for Applicants' document for the Class of 2016.
It tells you everything you need to know.

Basically - these are the 2 main differences:
1) You have to submit 2 SOEs from college professors.
WP prefers these from a Math and English professor - but a SOE from any professor is accepted.

2) 1st Semester transcripts are required before WP will evaluate your file.
Have the Fall Semester transcript sent in ASAP.

Fun Fact - Approximately 1/3 of each class did not enter WP directly out of high school.

For clarification, while DoDMERB is valid for 2 years, for it to be useful to USMA, the valid period must extend past R-Day, or USMA will not be able to use it. DS was in a situation where his expired about a week before R-Day and it took a lot of prying to find out why his DoDMERB results were not acceptable (he was reapplying). Turns out a simple form is all you need to send to DoDMERB to extend that valid timeline if you can verify that nothing has changed in your health since your exam, just a heads up that the timing does need to be monitored and it must cover through R-Day.

My son had access to his 1st semester college grades through his college email account - once they were posted. He emailed a member of his admissions team at WP to see if he could email a copy of the grades directly to West Point, or did they have to come directly from the registrar's office. A member of the admissions team (Northeast) emailed him back and said that he could email them himself. Once he emailed them to West Point they were posted on his file application - on the portal - within 24 hours. This was done in late December.
We were proactive in this since we wanted to make sure everything was done in a timely manner. We have had great success dealing with our RC's staff. Anything they said they would do, was done within a day or two. It saved us a lot of sleep knowing that we could depend on their assistance.
