This is my first time posting in the forums; I'm a cadet at Det 855 competing for SFT this semester, majoring in Computer Science. My plan up until now has been to go to medical school, and become a flight surgeon in the AF - however, I have recently reconsidered that given the load I've already got, and evaluating what's realistic for me. Because of that, I'm thinking of other AFSCs that might be good for me. Where would be a good place to start to find more information on other officer careers in the AF? I'm thinking of something technology-centered due to my major; just not sure where to go from here.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Before you move forward answer something.

Have you investigated how it works regarding being a flight surgeon?
If not, pm Hornetguy.

You will not only have to complete med school, but also UPT. You can do 2 different paths.

Computer Science does not seem to be a med school academic field.

You may want to look into rated as an ABM or RPA.

My Son's opted for 4WYY Computer Engineering as his AFSC goal, The USAF is looking to make cuts in the BioMed fields if I recall, a tech AFSC might be a good thing to consider.

Best

Thanks for the replies! Our detachment has since had a career day, and I've been able to find some additional information that has proven very useful. I'm looking seriously at some options in cyberspace operations career fields, and feel pretty good about the options available!

Thanks also for the great forums; as a cadet, I find it very helpful to read about others' experiences across the nation!

Cyber is taking lots of people lately. Supposedly its the only field in the AF that is actually seeing an INCREASE in its budget this year. Many comp sci majors are being forced into it. I didnt get selected for cyber but I know a few people who did and they say it goes something like this:

You'll report to Keesler AFB for tech school. At some point during training you'll get put into either the A shred or B shred. Only like the top 10% get selected for the A shred and they go on to do the offensive hacking type cyber stuff. The rest go to B shred which is just pretty standard communications officer stuff.
