Interesting factoid I was told yesterday by persons who would know:

2016 class will be below 1200; probably about 1190 is what the goal is. This is down about 50 - 60 slots.

Only about 300 appointments have gone out as of 2/29.

Make of it what you wish.

SecondTime, Interesting - can you reveal the source for this data?

I can't provide a link, but I can most certainly I have read the article about the reduced class size. It is due to Navy's new requirements for the class of 2016 and beyond.

However, I have not heard about how many appointments have been given out. Where did you find that?

EDIT:
Found the link to the first part. Still haven't seen where only 300 have been handed out.

Don't read too much into this. Federal law requires that the total size of the Brigade just prior to each year's graduation be less than 4400. For whatever reason(s), retention is up. With higher retention, fewer coming in the pipeline.

Already said: I was told by a person who would know.

If you already have an appointment you are "among the most competitive" of all the applicants.

I'm sure in the next few weeks many will see BFEs [big and BROWN incidentally] arrive in their mailbox.

[Incidentally, had not seen the Navy Times article. Glad it supports what I was told.]

Good luck.

One person's manila is another person's brown.

In the end, it doesn't matter who told me . . . you'll either get a BFE [manila, brown, or even orange] or you won't.

USAFA's new class is only going to be 800 - over a 33% cut!

Rumors, rumors everywhere! I guess everyone needs to remember this is only an information board and not an official source before they get too wound up over what may or may not happen. I guess I also don't trust "anonymous" sources and never have. Too often they are people who simply want to appear to know more than they do. 20+ years in the service and many times awaiting the results of such boards, including RIFs and SERBs. Once when I first joined and again in the past year for some tells me no one but those in the room making the decision really know and they won't talk, certainly not with the full story.

It's not much of a surprise that the services are cutting down their size given the current administration. Rumor that I've heard-rumor-is that the navy is less effected because of ships already being built. That may be the reason USNA is looking at bringing in 1200 plebes as opposed to 1000 at USAFA, and whatever USMA is bringing in (no doubt lower than their usual class size)

The decrease is more a product of a combination of lower attrition and higher class sizes for previous classes than anything else.

Based on what I have read in this thread, about 900 BFEs should be mailed out in the next 3 weeks...major mailbox stalking ahead :)

BFE

I'm color blind, so I don't know what color. And I am fat (so says my DW), so fat is relative.

Not really (at least on the first account). But I figured that I would add a (an additional) little bit of humor. :shake:
