Hi everyone!

After reviewing my choices for fall of next year I have decided to accept admission to Norwich University! Very excited.

That being said, I know I have to purchase a pair of boots and I want them to be thoroughly broken in before then. I was wondering if these would be okay .http://www.bellevilleshoe.com/product.php
They're insulated and waterproof which I thought would be best for Vermont

All norwich said is that they had to be tan and they had to be 8 inches with no zippers
Any advice/recommendations are always appreciated

Thanks

Congratulations on your Norwich decision! My DS is a new cadet there. He purchased those same boots and broke them in well before going up there. He also got a light weight boot with a footbed that is perforated to allow water to drain, which I think he wore in the dog river run.http://www.uspatriottactical.com/otb-8-desertlite-boot.html This way he had 2 pairs of boots and he could switch them out. These boots did not require much break in time at all and they are not for winter.

thanks for your suggestion! would it be a bad idea to wear those boots (the insulated waterproof) ones I picked out for the first few months/dog river? Should I get a second pair?
Thanks again

My DS is also a Cadet at Norwich. We bought him a summer pair and a Winter pair of Belleville boots. Perhaps more important though you should get boot dryers. The boots WILL get wet and boot dryers help with the moisture and keep them from stinking.

thank you for your recommendation hopeful mom

I will definitely consider getting another pair, it seems like a good idea, and will get boot dryers

Belleville is a very good brand. Bates makes a good boot, too. Make sure whatever you buy is authorized for wear with your ACUs (while you may be okay with the corps, if you do AROTC, you may get push-back and find yourself buying new boots).

Also, make sure you apply a couple of coats of Camp Dry (green can) on them BEFORE you start wearing them (i.e., before they get scuffed). Yes, the Camp Dry will still allow your feet to breath. The reason I say this is that if you don't protect your boots with silicon before you get them marked up, you are likely to get dirt or grass stains on them. As a rook, you will be expected to have clean boots all the time in garrison, and it is a real PAIN to clean boots that haven't been treated properly. There is "leather friendly" Camp Dry, but I recommend the green can (it has the highest concentration of silicon and doesn't hurt the leather). Also, make sure you let them dry in the garage after applying the Camp Dry -- if you bring them inside, you'll stink up your entire house by morning.

Congrats on Norwich!!!!! Essayons!!!

Thank you so much patentesq! I didn't even think about boot care

What is your opinion on having two pairs of boots? One thats insulated/waterproof and one thats just maybe waterproof for the like 1 week before its cold all the time :big grin:

Actually I do recall my son also got a pair of Danner boots for winter (cold, insulated and waterproof) Pricey but worth it for him coming from a warm climate and not used to snow! So he has 3 pairs of boots up there. In addition to all the AROTC stuff he was on the ranger challenge team so he did a lot of running in his boots, having the extra pair to change off was helpful for him. Regardless of what boots you wear for the dog river run, your feet will get wet :)

I agree that two pairs of boots is the way to go. You can wear one pair while the other pair is drying out.

I had Danner boots as well, but I don't recommend wearing them until the snow starts falling (November). They are heavier than regular boots, and you will tire out easily if you show up at Rook Week with heavy, insulated boots (contrary to popular belief, August can be quite hot in Vermont). I was in Mountain Cold Weather Company for AROTC, and insulated Danner boots in the field were a must for the winter. My recommendation is to have your parents ship them to you at a later date once you get settled in to the normal routine or classes, etc.

Alright thanks guys, Im going to go for the 2 pairs of boots. One waterproof pair for the first few months, and a pair of insulated waterproof boots.

http://www.bellevilleshoe.com/product.php?current_product=26 (waterproof)
http://www.bellevilleshoe.com/product.php?current_product=27 (waterproof and insulated) These are the boots incase anyone is interested

I want to get boot dryers too, but is that allowed?

Also, what is your opinion on an extra set of ACU's? One to always have ready for inspections; the others to wear and get dirty in

I know patentesq touched a bit upon care of the boots, is there anything else I should know?

Thanks so much again for all the help

Although my DS does not have a boot dryer, I know there are other rooks that do. I do not know if they were actually allowed to use them though haha!? My son did get at least one more set of ACUs but he got them at norwich from the uniform store sometime after rook week I think.
BTW, he was fine with one pair of bates high gloss black Oxford shoes.

Thank you philmont, I'll probably wait to get the ACU's at the uniform store.

Does anyone know if Im required to have pumps?

Are we supposed to have high gloss opposed to leather?

Thanks again everyone
