Hello from Wisconsin....Our son just received his appointment call last week to the USAFA and is elated to become a member of this prestigious group. For those of you that have gone through moving their son/daughter to a different state (he's our oldest of four children....yep, this is will be hard!) what should I know??? The academy process has been a total learning curve for our entire family as no one in our families has ever explored this pathway. I would appreciate words of advice so we can prepare for what's ahead of us. We could not be more proud and our son is ecstatic to begin the process in June, 2012!

Thank-you...
Curious Mom!

BTW...we did book airline tickets and hotel rooms for Parent's Weekend already as we heard that's a "must"! Anything else we should be doing ASAP?

Congrats to your DS! If he has already filled out the paperwork that came in the envelope and sent it back, the AFA should send him another package in several weeks with more information and more paperwork. Some of that will include travel info.

When I got my appointment package from the AFA, there was a check box for whether you wanted the Air Force to purchase tickets for you or whether you wanted to purchase them yourselves. Personally, I'd let the AF do it, just to save the hassle.

From friends who have been down the path ahead of me, I know there really isn't much you have to worry about in moving your son. Take any gear the academy tells you to, show up on I-day, and do what you're told. :thumb:

Contact your local AFA Parent's Association and join, you will be among many others in the same situation, as well as many "experienced" parents that can guide you and answer all your questions.

So helpful....

Thanks for your responses! He received the official letter today which makes it feel even "more real".....what an honor. Especially when you see that as few as 10% of the applicants are actually selected for the Academy. I will definitely join the parent group...these forums are SO helpful. Thanks again!

Also, at this point our son plans to travel alone...keeping his car at the Academy. Is there anything negative about this plan...besides the fact I can't see him off to his actual I-day? :frown: I have a feeling this is going to be harder on me!

You may want to check and see if a c4c is allowed to have a vehicle.

My guess is "absolutely not."

Luigi is 100% correct. No car until he is a C2C (junior year).

WOW!!

Wow...It's good I included that, huh? I'm guessing he'll get all of those details in his appointee kit but it's great to know that now before we invest in a different car. Again...this forum is terrific. Thanks, guys!
