I'm going to be attending SLS Session 2 over the summer and have seen mixed statements online about whether or not the CFA administered while there will actually count toward your application. Can anyone clarify this as a definite yes/no?

Also, for the mile run, is this done on a track or on a trail? I seem to remember seeing on a different thread that the mile run is actually done along a trail, that's why I ask.

Thanks

- Yes, CFA is administered to everyone at SLS
- Mine was done on an outdoor trail
- It was great to get it out of the way that early in my appplication cycle
- But expect to be exhausted when you do it at SLS (lots of fun stuff going on at SLS will wear you out!)

YES, it is administered doing SLS and YES, it is submitted for your application (which is great if you pass. If you don't, don't worry, it won't harm you, as far as I am aware).

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS! Trust me... prepare for the CFA at SLS... TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS CFA... Seriously... do it in a serious manner!

And do yourself a favor and PRACTICE BB-THROWS!

Good luck!

Thanks to both of you for your responses.

BillSL - Just because I'm curious. In your response you said it would be great "if you pass" the CFA while at the Summer Leadership Seminar. I was under the assumption that the CFA worked much like the APFT, where you score in a certain percentile for each event. Is this how the CFA works or do you simply have to pass the bare minimums?

Thanks

There is a certain treshold that I don't think anyone knows exactly what the values for each event are.

You'll get a sheet of paper at SLS with your results telling you if you are "at risk" or not.

IMO: shoot for the max; treat averages as minimum. CFA constitutes 10% of your WCS (Whole Candidate Score)... so try your best :D

And go with this mentality: after you're done with the CFA, well, you are DONE. So give it your best shot.

My DS has made unbelievable progress on the pull-ups starting with only being able to do 3 two months ago, to ripping off 15 yesterday! The basketball throw is another story.....He has not been able to get it past 57 ft. Does anyone have some advice for improving the BB throw? He is attending SLS week 1 and would like to pass all areas. Thx.

Do your best

From what my D told me about sls which was 2 yrs ago now, it can get pretty hectic. Apparently some scores got out of order but you can only control your performance. At the last day during the closing ceremony there was an awards presentation to include best cfa score - pretty cool to get an award at sls and im sure some of those awards like best team member come with a nice recc attached to your packet.

Just make sure you don't get lost when moving from station to station...!

I don't recall there being an award for "best team member"... as far as I am aware, you get an award for exceptional participation in a certain class ("best team member" might come from good participation in a class), in some way or another. Some awards are pretty nice (such as "Leader among Leaders of Character"). I don't know if that helps your USMA application... but it can help in other ways. I think this award was nice, and I think it might have played a role into getting me one of my nominations.

Bill youre right, i couldn't remember, just thought it was cool to get awards since it was unexpected

Speaking of SLS...

Does anyone have an idea of when we will be notified of which Seminar Course we will be attending while at SLS? On my portal there is a link that says "Seminar Course Descriptions", but it says that it isn't available to be viewed yet. Seeing as how the April application deadline has passed, is it safe to assume that we should be finding out sometime soon?
Thanks
