When did SAF Come into existence?

I don't know how it started up, but I recall some of us came on board shortly after it started and I have been here since 07 when DS was in HS.

I've always wondered how this website got started up...

Doing a search, it would appear that the first members appeared on or around June 8, 2006. Those would include Tactical Nuke, kp2001, and Zaphod. Hornetguy, raimius, and Jamzmom joined the next day.

I'm sure one of them probably knows where the original core group came from and can give the complete history...

I am a founding member and joined on June 9, 2006. The core group of people that first joined SAF came from the College Confidential service academy boards. If the founder of SAF wants to be publicly known he/she will post their story.

Look at my 'member since' date. June 2006.
The original members all came from College Confidential.
TacticalNuke is the administrator and owner of this site. He formed this as a AFA Cadet because College Confidential could not meet the specialized needs of candidates and parents.

Pardon my omission of your early membership... Thanks for chipping in. :thumb:

USNA1985 was also one of the firsts as well as a few others that most would not have heard of as they are not active anymore.

Thinking about it I recall that was how I found out about SAF. Back in 07 CC was a hopping site for the SA's, but now it is probably close to non-existent. In 07, everyone on the SA portion of CC referred this site to go to and like the Pied Piper we all followed.

Wasn't JAMZMom also a founder regarding membership?

Interesting. I wonder what Tactical Nuke is doing now and if he/she's still in the Air Force.

I remember awhile back we got a mention on Airwarriors http://www.airwarriors.com/community/index.php?threads/great-forum-on-the-academies-rotc.38590/

I honestly have no idea how I found SAF. I was on Military.com for awhile. Somehow I found my way over here. I think I was actually on my ship when I found it. Not much Coast Guard Academy at the time.

I had been on the CC boards since around 2005 (09-03-2005). Several of us were over there as noted. We started to really fill those boards up like you see these, but they were only by service academy and lacked all the other sections you see here. TN got this place going in 2006 and let us know so we migrated over. The rest is history. Crazy to think I joined CC and SAF as a high schooler, stayed on my entire cadet time, and I'm still on here now as an Alumni.

It's a blessing and a curse I think. The boards are old enough to have people like raimius, eagle36, and me who've done the whole process. Have parents like Bullet and Pima whose kid chose ROTC, but stick around to give good advice. Other parents have been here with their kids in the entire process. Quite a bit of experience all around.

Here's the old board to see how much of a ghost town it is now! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/u-s-service-academies/

Not only did you and the original bunch come over from CC, but y'all left bread crumbs to bring other members (myself included) over in later years. I think if we keep (I have) leaving reference to this forum there, we will keep attracting candidates/families who are just entering the process and will continue to help build this board.

I found it via google.. What a lucky find too.. It has helped my DS to make better more educated decisions, and understand the process. I don't know if things would have turned out like they have thus far for DS.. Thank you founding fathers. There isn't any resource close to this anywhere else:thumb:

It is a great nod to this site that if you google a specific question, it probably has been asked here and it will show up on google.

Yes exactly! And that's how we found this forum as well. It has been absolutely invaluable, and I thank all those who have taken the time to answer my questions.

A few years ago, many of the same people participated both here and on CC, discussing basically the same topics. Unfortunately, the moderators on CC have a very hands off approach when it comes to keeping threads from turning into a personal boxing match between individuals having differing points of view.

Most left CC for good when that happened and there are very few regulars who post there anymore.

By comparison, the mods on this site do an excellent job of keeping topics on track and the discussions civil. Everyone is entitled to express their opinions, but personal attacks and bashing of others who have a point of view different from your own have no place on such forums.

Time2,

I agree, many did leave CC due to the mods over there. Many also came here because almost every thread posters would link this site and tell the OP you have a better chance of finding the answer on SAF. I don't think the mods ever placed the links, it was always posters that found this site more informative.

The other reason I think it became such a success over here was many of the posters were cadets, AD or retired, and at the very start they always had DoDMERB, with an expert to answer the questions. That is key because it is such a hard thing to navigate.

To me it was the knowledge of the posters that made me leave CC. CC felt more like hit or miss or the blind leading the blind.

Let's not forget the moral support here too... This forum is designed for those attempting the path less traveled and it is full of "how to get there" info for those that have to go to plan B or plan C.. Without SAF I doubt I would have made the good decisions with my son when the scholarships didn't come through. The honest opinions and factual info found only here has been priceless. If you've never gone to or sent a kid to college before, much less one wanting a military career, it can be an overwhelming undertaking. I have never been afraid to share an opinion or experience here either. If something posted is wrong the Mods or someone else will correct it respectfully. Finding info on the internet is never a problem... finding good info is rare except here.
