Getting injured during Plebe Summer

Hello,

I was wondering what happens when a new midshipmen gets injured during Plebe Summer. Say a person gets a minor injury, like a sprained ankle. Would they send them home then? From what I understand, a more serious injury would result in a medical turnback. What if an individual gets sick? Would the person get rest and then be allowed to return to training?

Thank you!

From my understanding once your sworn in the navy takes care of you in most cases, with exception to major injuries that make service impractical/impossible. See ya in June!

There are lots of "broken" Plebes each summer. It seems that almost everyone gets "Plebe hack," a sickness that includes coughing and sore throat. Many have sprains and bruises. Occasionally, someone is injured more seriously. In this year's graduating class, there is at least one Mid who had an injury serious enough to require surgery. Even that injury did not require a "turnback."

My Mid had a sprained ankle during her Plebe Summer. She was taken to the medical staff, who gave her ice packs to on it, and they wrapped it. She had permission to use crutches and to do "alternate training" for a day or two. She chose to go back to regular training with her squad, as the sprain wasn't too bad. The point is that there is a trained medical staff on hand, and they will provide any needed care. Also, the Firsties who run the squads and platoons receive training to make sure that they recognize various injuries and illnesses, sometimes even before a Plebe recognizes the problem.

One word of advice on this and your many other recent posts: Relax! You'll be fine.

I-day is months away. Enjoy your senior year. Run. Spend time with your family. Run. Enjoy your friends (but not too much). Did I mention run?

Remember thousands have made it - you will too. The Navy wants you to succeed. :thumb:

Our DS broke his ankle 17 days into Plebe Summer during the obstacle course. He had surgery at the Annapolis hospital and recovered at Bancroft. A detailer stayed with him and he had a great outcome with his surgery. Then he hobbled around and did whatever he could for the rest of the time. He was well taken care of and his Navy family came to his aide when mom and dad couldn't. We felt very blessed by the number of people on this forum who offered help and assistance. Since then (he is a 3/C now) he has also had 6 stitches in his head due to an accident during flag football........(someone's teeth landed in his forehead! :shake:). All in all, he just rolls with the punches.
