book allowance for ROTC scholarship

My daughter is going to college on a ROTC scholarship. We understand that she will be getting some money towards books also. I would like to know how this money is distributed. She was thinking of trying to get used books on line but doesn't know if the army will want a receipt or if the book money is going to the college. Thanks for your input

no receipts needed
 
I think all she has to do is set up an account with a bank for direct deposit and the flat book amount will be direct deposited at some point during the semester. With NROTC it takes a while. She does not need to provide receipts so she can buy used or even e-books if she wants to.
 
She will have to have a checking account to receive the stipend also. Glad to see that the AF isn't any slower paying for books.

Heads up to beachgal, S scholarship paid on Sept 11 2007 and the money was due the normally the Sept. 1st. His university allowed him to defer until October. Some parents have to juggle money for a few weeks putting on a card or using savings.

The book money for spring arrived March 5th.
 
As another heads up: I know of one army scholarship that didn't have his stipend kick in until nearly Thanksgiving so it's a good idea to be prepared to have the stipend and book money come in late. Most colleges will allow you to defer because of when it kicks in, I know some (or at least Clemson) are aware of that ROTC (in that case AF) scholarships are going to request deferment and do it automatically. I think most colleges are aware of the hang ups that occur with ROTC and try to help out.

This will happen if the cadet has not passed the APFT or is not medically qualified. Cadets have until the end of the first semester for both of these or the scholarship is forfeited.
Cadets do show up every year who do not pass the first APFT or who are injured and can't take it - they risk being faced with a tuition bill.
 
My daughter is going to the same school as Beachgal (we know each other) the girls found out directly from their battalion that they give her an allowance for books that covers the cost generously. We have to pay upfront, though and use her college account which allows us to do so. I have a feeling that this type of things vary greatly from battalion to battalion at least with AROTC. They also have agreements with the schools etc.. so it depends on the school. so far we only had to pay for room and board. Army picks up fees and tuition.
 
All Services are paid through DFAS, the timing is all in when the paperwork is processed. AFROTC stiped paid S 67.50 in Aug 08 for the month of August. But the book money didn't come til mid/late Oct.
