Can anyone answer a few questions on this?

Some background: I'm a Freshman, was a 4.0 student last semester, and I go to a very rigorous Private School in MN called The Blake School. I am pretty physically fit (varsity letter in hockey).

1. Is this academy very academically rigorous? On a college prep level? Rigorous enough to get into a Service Academy?

2. Do they offer PT there, or something of that nature to help me improve my fitness?

3. Do you get to do Marine Corps Activities? (Obstacle Course, shooting rifles etc.)

I'd stick with your school, to be honest with you. But I've always been leery of "academies" like this one. I mean, it's not a military-sanctioned school or anything, it doesn't look like. I presume they do offer plenty of activities that are military-esque. But going to a rigorous private school, and doing well, you're already plenty on your way.

Of course, I don't know much about this academy. I do know Harlingen is not the prettiest part of my state. But to answer your questions, in order: 1. Maybe. 2. Probably. 3. I presume they have similar things, but nothing like NJROTC. Or MCJROTC, apparently that's a thing. Judging by this place's testimonials, it's not exactly the premier service academy preparatory school. But research will provide you with your answers. And, honestly, taking care of your own research is a very admirable trait. Observe. Open your ears more than your mouth. Think before you act. Et cetera, et cetera...

Do these nominations count as actual nominations, and if so, would someone who got one be competing with others from the school?
 
I'd stick with your current school, especially considering you'd have to do a move to go to MMA. I go to a random generic public school in SoCal in the same congressional district as Oxford Academy and pretty close to Whitney High School, considered two of the nation's best high schools, and still made it to USNA (I'm not the first one to do so, either). I'm pretty sure your school is already a better academic powerhouse than mine; just do your best in all academic areas and you'll be on your way to an appointment.

If there's no JROTC unit at your school, look into USNSCC, CAP, or Young Marines. I know the USNSCC guys do some really cool stuff in the summer (Basic Training, EOD camps, SEAL camps, and so on).

If you want to shoot, you can just go to the range. If you want to PT, you can literally do that everywhere. And I'm sure your neighborhood recruitment office can help you with the more creative ideas for PT.

Any NJROTC/MCJROTC honor unit (for NJROTC, a unit that has earned the Distinguished Unit Award) can submit six nominations to USNA. Any other NJROTC/MCJROTC unit can submit three nominations to USNA. These are legitimate nominations, but the quota for appointments to be made by these nominations is something like twenty per year for USNA. Definitely not a nomination source to depend on. I got an NJROTC nomination, but was appointed off of my congressman's slate in the end anyway.

I can't give you an absolute answer on that, but I would assume that the only nomination they have to offer would be for MCJROTC, which it looks like most of the school is a part of. You'd probably be competing with many of the other students at the school, which is probably in the hundreds, just to receive that nomination. And I'm not sure how JROTC nominations work, although I do know that even if you have one secured, you're encouraged to seek a Congressional nomination.

Now, I'm just wondering, why are you dissatisfied with your school? Even just a very quick search shows it to be pretty fantastic. And you certainly seem to be doing well. I guess I just figure there wouldn't really be much benefit to attending this academy as opposed to such a rigorous private school, and excelling there.

I'm not dissatisfied, in fact I enjoy the school, its just that there are absolutely zero military related activities at or around my school, outside of a Sea Cadet Unit that I requested more information for, but never got back to after 2 months. The military side appeals to me, so I was wondering if it could offer the same academic rigors, while also incorporating the military aspect.

I'd dig into that USNSCC unit a bit more.

I requested information from my local Navy recruitment office in sophomore year about applying to NROTC and USNA. They have yet to get back to me.

So follow-up. Go back and ask again. Search online to find your own answerable. Don't wait on others. Be proactive. :thumb:
 
I sent an email to the address posted right now, along with submitting another request, but the site has not been updated since 2009, and all information pertains to 2009 so I'm a little bit suspicious.

Look for a street address or phone number to send a letter/make a call to.
 
I am a Sea Cadet instructor in Washington State. If you do not receive a response from your nearby unit, you should look on the website for the Regional Director or for the Commanding Officer of a nearby unit. If you still have trouble, please PM me and I will try to help you.

Yes but consider this 300+ ppl get honor school JROTC/ROTC noms a year and only 20 can be admitted with just this nom. Therefore it probably is not worth it.

If you went to one of these schools it would be very competitive to get that honor school nom. Even if you do get it, the chances of an appointment with it is still extremely slim.

Excelling where the OP was would probably be more helpful for the OP.
 
OP. You attend this school and after (almost) your first year you can't answer your questions?

Yes, The Marine Military Academy challenges a student academically.

Yes, MMA has a large physical component (daily).

3. Do you get to do Marine Corps Activities? (Obstacle Course, shooting rifles etc.)
Yes, MMA provides access to all this and more.

The Marine Military Academy's website received a "face lift" March 2012 (using same web address: www.mma-tx.org). However, previous to this roll out date our website continued to be updated almost on a daily basis so I'm not sure where the "2009" reference came from. Unless you were referring to the "dated" video we continued to have available for those to view and the numerous picture archive we continued to carry.

We were referring to his local USNSCC unit's website, which is apparently outdated.
