WIFI at USNA

I heard somewhere that there is no WIFI at USNA, in the quarters. Then I heard somewhere else that a mid was using "FaceTime," which requires WIFI. The reason I'm asking is that DS's cousin broke his DP (Dear Phone). We're going to replace it but will invest in an iPhone if there is WIFI. And yes, we do know that he won't be able to use his new DP, during PS (Plebe Summer), and maybe not a lot after that. But we have to renew a contract for 2 years for whatever phone he gets. So...DS needs a DP, except for PS, to call DM and DD on WIFI at USNA. :shake:
Any input is appreciated.

Purchasing a hotspot data plan perhaps? or connecting to an open network at one of the Annapolis coffee shops etc.

Apple is the source of the Facebook wifi connection requirement. I don't think you can use the USNA wifi for non-government issued equipment.

Memphis9489's post in the other thread indicates a "no" on WiFi in Bancroft. Also a "no" on Apple machines on USNA WiFi.

Purchasing a hotspot data plan perhaps
+1 for this suggestion.

Public WiFi hotspots are getting more numerous nowadays, but unlike Japan or South Korea, we don't have our streets lined with them quite yet.

With a data plan, he'll be able to do as he likes (internet, FaceTime, email, etc.) wherever he is (Bancroft Hall, T-Court, California, Maine, etc.) without needing to piggyback off of some house in the neighborhood with an unprotected network (which has its own risks).

Well from a media restriction standpoint plebe year an iPhone helps, because you can keep your music on it from what the plebes on my CVW told me.

You can keep your music on any smart phone these days, although iPhones are probably more convenient.

I don't have wifi where I live. I've heard there is wifi in 8th wing, but idk if that's true. Get 3G service if you want him to be able to use the internet on his phone.

Tango Video Calls

Hi profsparrow,
If your son gets an iPhone, you're correct, he will need a wifi signal to use Facetime. But there is an app called Tango Video Calls that does the same thing as Facetime but uses the cell's 3G data if wifi is not available. But since it uses data it will draw off the data plan that comes with an iPhone. Since the iPhone will grab a wifi signal before the 3G data signal Tango will work on either signal. But the other phone has to have Tango also for the video stuff to work, unless he's calling you and you're on an IOS device or Mac. Then, there's Skype, which has an iPhone app also. But it looks as if video calls can be done without wifi using an iPhone. BTW, 10 weeks 'til Haircut Day, but who's counting?:thumb:
Cheers...

It's not.

Starbucks and some other businesses with free wifi are spitting distance from the Yard though.
