Hello everybody, so i've been thinking about what to take to KP and stuff, I haven't received a packet yet, but I have thought of some questions. Since I am not allowed to bring my own laptop will I be able to bring like a flash drive with music and documents on it? What about an ipod? Can you bring a small video camera like a flip? I'm also curious to know how sports fit in to the schedule for the first couple weeks. I know we will have basic training stuff but do we still go to workout or what? I am going to email the coach on that last part but i figured someone might already know. thanks for the help

I know that your ipod gets taken away until after indoc and at the Open House the coach said training starts in September for swimming, so you won't have to worry about it until then.

If you google " usmma logging in" it will pull up a copy of the booklet you will soon receive. It is a previous year but close enough to get a better of idea of what you can bring and what you shouldn't ( which is everything not on the what to bring list). I can't remember if I mailed DS's iPod or took it to Parents Weekend, I think we mailed it after PWE

Since I am not allowed to bring my own laptop

This may not be true for the class of 2016. The last e-mail that was sent out indicated that 2016 will have to buy their own laptops. Stand by on that.

Whether or not you buy a computer from the academy or bring your own it will be turned over to the IT department, where they will take away your admin rights, including taking away the ability to use flash drives and other external storage devices, don't bother.

Can you bring a small video camera like a flip?

Not sure why you'd want to, you won't be allowed to use it during the first 22 days, called indoc, and even after indoc there won't be much to take pictures of until acceptance day/parents weekend.

They won't, during indoc you won't have free time, everyone is required to PT, but that is it. You won't be doing anything specific to the swim team.

Thanks everyone. I know its not like any other college, i was just curious to know if i would be able to have any of that stuff at all and it sounds like parents weekend or mailing them after indoc is a viable option. Music really helps me focus for studying sometimes and you never know when you going to want to take a video. I also read something that said 2016 had to purchase their own laptops, i think it came to be around $1,200 or something, but yes thanks for the help and advice.

Laptop

Superswimmer I believe the cost of the laptop is closer to 1,800 dollars. It has to meet the specific requirements for USMMA. The NEX at KP will be taking orders for the USMMA approved model in May which will include 4 yrs of support on the approved system configuration. You can call to place the order and it will be ready for indoc! Just a suggestion:smile:

Oh sweet bank account. I was looking at the specs for the laptop and my laptop fits all of them except its about $900 cheaper... yikes. Oh well, not much to do about it now, except inform the parents... bigger yikes. thanks Navy4ever!

I wouldn't go buying anything until you get your logging in book from USMMA

If they'll sell you one with the on campus tech support I'd do it, it is worth every penny. Drop in, poor water on it, they don't care. Take it down the hill and they'll give you a new one while they fix yours, no questions asked.

Also in addition to the agreeing that I'd wait for the logging in book and instructions another thing to look into to protect whatever investment you have to make in that laptop and other items you might need to buy, accumulate or use during your time at USMMA -

Look into USAA "Renters Insurance" it even covers things like helping you replace a computer that is stolen or left on an Amtrak train while returning back to school because you were/are distracted trying to get a good looking Coed from Boston's phone number right before you have to get off the train at Penn Station. Don't ask how I know that, I really don't remember when or how I learned such things were covered, especially for a policy that cost so little.

Superswimmer- No I Pod. No video camera. I wouldn't even take the flash drive to INDOC. If found, it will be confiscated (and you might find yourself donig a few extra push ups for having these things!) Stick to the list that will be in the Loggin In Book. I just heard that the Loggin In Book is "in print" right now- so hopefully you will receive it in a few weeks. We actually upgraded DS's phone after INDOC began (we couldn't upgrade until that time) and mailed him his I Phone after INDOC. DS's sisters downloaded a bunch of music to his I Phone prior to us mailing it to him. Do take your cell phone- they will take it away from you but will give it back for those Sunday phone calls home! Some of the things you mentioned, your parents might be able to mail to you AFTER INDOC. Trust me, they'll get to know the employees at the local Post Office very well. (lol) You will have the opportunity to purchase a printer (and get ink, insurance on the printer, paper) prior to INDOC from the NEX. You do NOT have to purchase the NEX printer but it's a good one. I have a suggestion; why don't you get on your 2016 student fb page and ask there about the flash drive/ music- you have some set backs (that are good kids) that are on that fb page- and they would know all of this stuff, and I'm sure would be more than happy to help out and answer your ?'s. Best of luck to you and Congrats again!

As far as pushing for an iPod goes, it is far more likely that you won't push. Instead, everyone else in your platoon will push while you watch. It is a great way to NOT make friends.

The best way is to read the Logging In instructions that come to you in a packet orbit used to be online on the USMMA website. It tells you everything you need to take. The extras you may want your parents can bring Parents weekend.
