VMI Tuition/NROTC Scholarship

Can someone please clarify if the NROTC scholarship covers the complete cost of attending VMI? VMI's website states, "The fee structure at VMI is very different from those of other colleges. VMI costs cover everything (except books). The quartermaster charge includes clothing, laundry, tailoring, and haircuts. Room & Board includes living in the barracks and all meals. The auxiliary fee includes medical services, cadet facilities & activities, athletics, and other services. 90% of VMI cadets graduate in 4 years."

This leads me to believe that the cost is not broken down and therefore does the scholarship cover the whole thing?

Thanks in advance for help. DS has NROTC scholarship assigned to VMI and now we've got our fingers crossed that he gets an offer from the wait list. Starting to look at other units with openings to come up with Plan B since his first choice school has frozen their wait list.

In reverse order:
If it were me- I would hound the VMI admissions office and Col Beitzel personally if you really want to go to VMI , along with the NROTC department telling them your predicament and that you have received an NROTC scholarship but have to respond before 5/1. I think that having that scholarship will carry a lot of weight especially if the Commander of the NROTC department weighs in.
Based on my experience with the Army scholarship- the ROTC scholarship will pay for Tuition and Auxiliary Fees- R&B and Quartermaster are going to be on your dime though they will also give you a book and uniform allowance and I believe that there is an additional scholarship for $1000/semester that goes to all ROTC scholarship holders from the "VMI Foundation". (The problem with having kids over the age of 18 is that all of this goes thru them rather than thru Mom &Dad so I am trying to recall rather than being able to look the accounts up myself.)

My son is current cadet, has a NROTC scholarship - so I can tell you from our experience - the NROTC scholarship covers tutition and anything that ends with word " FEE"S - for about 5,000/per semester ( we are in-state - so is based on in state tutition). My son does also receive what Bruno mentioned- shows up for us as another $500/semester. This covers about 1/2 the bill. The cadet would also be eligible for any foundation awards - these go thru the financial aid office and are based on the FASA info and cadet's pkg. Once the cadet has accepted appointment, and assuming all the financial info is in, you all should receive word from the financial aid outlining the awards, and the loans offered. I remember our RAT year, we had to sign an IOU to cover what the navy would eventually send - the first semester VMI wont recieve the funds from navy in time, so they allow you all to pledge to cover it. This only happens the first semester. Also the book money doesnt come in advance, but is another direct deposit once all the systems are up and running. Like wise for the stipend they receive. Matriculation day starts early, at leas tour year, the cadet will first meet with navy unit, to officially sign papers, turn in all the forms that you will receive during the summer for direct deposit etc - as I recall my son started getting deposits of book and stipend certainly october. I have always found the financial office very helpful - especially this preparation time -I echo Bruno's recommendation - call VMI and Navy unit with specific questions. Good luck larrys mom

Bruno, you suggest "hounding admissions office and Col Beitzel personally"... as I am completely over my head in uncharted water here, exactly how is this done without become an irritant?

We've spoken to the admissions office, and sent an email to Col Beitzel informing him of the situation. We are contemplating a road trip to VMI this week to meet face-to-face to discuss the wait list/scholarship situation. Beyond that, what is one to do?

Also, do you know if the wait list is competitive or not? DS is an AP/honor student with a very competitive SAT, in addition to the scholarship. Thanks.
