Its been quite the interesting 2 years around here. From turning down an appointment to the Naval Academy with a senatorial and congressional nomination to walking on as a college programmer to see if DS really did like the military and finally today recieving a 2 year scholarship. Maybe thats how it was meant to be. DS was never thrilled about going to Annapolis and turned it down May 1, 2010 the last possible day. Maybe I wanted it more than he did. He enrolled at a top public university that he loves, joined a fraternity that he loves and has excelled to near the top of his NROTC unit. Its all about the end result- getting a commission, graduating and enjoying the process. Good luck to all other programmers.

Congratulations Terp.. I give Kudo's to any young person that has the wisdom to admit they aren't sure and take a step back from the "golden ticket". That had to be a very tough decision for him. I am glad that he is happy where he is and on a great track for getting his dream. I'm hoping for a similar outcome for DS who is currently a college programmer. Not counting on it but it would be nice.

This is music to my ears! Congratulations! Hoping for similar news SOON for our college programmer DS!

Congratulations to your son, I agree with bjkuds. Kids sometimes take a route because they think it's something they "Should do" instead of want they want to do. I have a great deal of respect for young people that are able to make such hard choices. My older son took the same path and went AROTC, he has loved his college experience and ROTC and wouldn't change a thing, I truly believe he owes his success to being in a place he was happy. You are so right, it's all about the end result and enjoying the process.

Congratulations Terp. This is quite an accomplishment and acknowledgement. I know you are very proud of him, and deservedly so.

Add my DS to the list!!

Thank you God!!! DS just called and he was also awarded a 2 year scholarship. Several of you have followed our saga and the frustration and discouragement of being passed over for scholarship time and time again when there was nothing for him to improve. This is absolutely a day we won't forget!

Miracles do happen!

My DS was notified of a 2 year scholarship a couple of hours ago! Like so many of you, I watched my ds perservere through the heartache of the TWE from the Academy, followed by the news of no NROTC scholarship out of High School. Never discouraged, he applied as a college programmer and worked his butt off. Was ranked #1 at the end of his freshman year and even got a leadership medal and ribbon. His unit put him in for the scholarship and of course, there were little to no 3 year scholarships last year. So he starts his sophmore year and again gives it his all. He is assigned various leadership responsibilities, like assistant squad leader and mess officer. He volunteers for the drill team and again, just really breaks his back doing everything he possibly could. His goal was advanced standing. As a tier 3 Navy option he knew his chances for a scholarship were slim to none. Still, he gives it his all and for the second year in a row is again ranked #1, still wondering if he will get the chance to serve as a Naval officer.

A few hours ago his Lt. texted him with the news. We are all numb with joy and so happy for him. Miracles do happen! Never give up. Hoo Yah! ::thumb:

LCLESQ,

That's exciting. The hard work pays off. Awesome. Maybe my DS will stand a chance next year. WOOHOO!

Kinnem--your ds should know that he should never give up and always follow his heart. I found out that a Marine option in ds's unit also got a scholarship. Apparently, the powers that be are actually paying attention to the kids who are leaving it out there every day. Both my ds and his MO buddy worked their tails off, got knocked down and kept getting back up without ever complaining.
I'm really encouraged by the fact that the powers that be recognized these leadership qualities and I hope it works out for your ds as well

Thanks for the encouragement.

Yes this is encouraging,, Congrats to all who have been successful thus far.

My oldest son got turned down by the Naval Academy two years ago. Didn't receive the Navy ROTC scholarship that he was hoping for, either.

He had a number of academic scholarships to choose from, so he decided to go to Auburn University and be a college programmer with their ROTC. He has worked his butt off for the past two years -- volunteering for everything he could, taking whatever leadership opportunities were available to him, tutoring anyone who needed help, etc.

They put him in for a 3-year scholarship last year and got turned down.

This morning they had their awards ceremony and gave him a leadership award and then announced that he was getting a sideload scholarship. He is on top of the world right now!!!
