Hi everybody. I have a quick question:

Does USNA offer swim as a club sport or intramural sport? (for those that are not D1 athletes)

Also a list of the sports offered would be greatly appreciated!:thumb:

When my DD was at her CVW she spoke with the swim coach and it was our take that there isn't an intramural or club for swimming. I don't think there is available pool time to even participate in a USA swim club.

Triathlon (obviously) does a lot of swimming, but there's no club swimming.

There's an informal group that gets together with a swim coach to do some pretty tough workouts but I'm not sure if that's still going on.

Keep in mind there's also open swim hours. Give your schedule the only time you might be able to go is 0530 or during a meal time but hey! It's something, right?

I'd be willing to try and start a Club Swimming team at Navy. Not sure if it will be as easy as it is to start something at a civilian college, but hey, I know there are a lot of us who had some decent swimming careers in high school and want to continue without that D1 obligation-- or maybe some of us aren't D1 material, but still Club material.

I'd imagine as a plebe it'd be tough to start this up, but I'm definitely thinking about it. From the looks of it though, the club sports that Navy offers are sports that are not offered as D1, so seems like it would not be possible considering Swimming is offered D1.

Not to completely shut you down, but it's TOUGH to start a club sport. My roommate is the founder of the Women's Ice Hockey Team. She started working on it plebe year and even now I think they just have ECA status.

The other problem is space. I'm not sure when the renovations to the Lejeune Pool are going to be done, but there's only so much pool space and time. If you did start a club team, you're taking time and space away either from other formal organizations or just other mids who need to work on swimming. One of my other friends tried starting a club lacrosse (female) team and had coaches lined up and everything, but couldn't find any space to go and so she got shut down. It would be even worse trying to deal with pools.

It's possible to swim during meal times? Oh, that is quite good to hear. I'll need all the extra practice I can get.

There are two pools at USNA and the Water Polo and Swim teams obviously have priority to those during practice and games. You will figure out when open swim time from upperclassman and coaches. Lunch at the Academy is around 1.5 hours long to allow for noon meal formation, actual lunch and then sometimes there is training after lunch. I think that still holds true Hurricane12? I think we had training maybe once a week or once every other week, not sure about current Academy training. So there is time, but its a tight window. If you have a free period after lunch that also gives more flexbility. Most days after class you will have sports or drill but that is not everyday. Also drill and intramurals don't take up hours upon hours normally. You can generally still squeeze in some workouts before or after dinner until study hour. Now when you become an upperclassman, there is more flexibility as no one monitors your study time and I had alot of friends who swam, ran, lifted during those times. You will quickly learn its all about time management.

Not only is it hard for the reasons stated above. Budget and $$$ also start to come into play, especially as a club sport.

Field Hockey was a Club sport and I think it still is. They play against other schools with "Club" designation. Navy had all women but some other schools allow men on their teams. That is the big difference between club and NCAA sanctioned teams. Women's hockey at Navy has come a long way.

You also have the pool at MacDonough Hall....

While Lejeune is shut down, there is ONLY the pool at MacD. Pool time becomes very tight - not sure when Lejeune re-opens

I echo the difficulty - but possibility - of starting an ECA/club activity. Some friends of ours started the equestrian club/team at USNA nearly 4 years ago. They've gained ECA status, but not club. It's a long, hard, road, but it can be done. In these days of budget cuts, it seems unlikely that new club sports will be allowed, as that level requires more of a financial commitment from USNA.
