I received a TWE this year. I will be going to Northern Arizona University with AFROTC. What should I tell the detachment leadership and what classes should I take to be competitive? Also, would I then have to request a nomination from the congressman and senators of Arizona or my home state? I'm guessing Arizona. Thank you in advance for your answers!

If you attend NAU in the Fall, I believe you will not be a resident and will not become a resident by virtue of attending school in Arizona. So I am thinking your home of record will still be your home state and you would need nominations from your home state.

As far as classes to take, I have seen other threads where it is recommended to mirror, as much as possible, the 4* year at the Academy, i.e., Calculus, Chemistry, Honors English, etc. I believe the curriculum information is in the Academy catalog.

Ok, Thank you. What should I tell the AFROTC detachment?

Be honest with them--tell them you're reapplying to the AFA when you get to campus in the fall. You'll need the commander's recommendation so you don't want to spring it on him/her at the last minute. They'll be supportive.

Hey there michigander,

My home of record is Omaha, Nebraska, but I went to college at the University of Minnesota. I was instructed to apply for Minnesota nominations by my counselor and I did receive a few so it is definitely possible. My counselor told me to apply where I usually vote, which for me was Minnesota. The best thing to do is call your counselor and check

michigander,

We just got back from visiting VMI. DS was very upfront with both admissions and AFROTC that he intended to reapply to USAFA next year. Both departments were very supportive of his plans. I think you really need to discuss your plans with your detachment. Although DS had already decided VMI was where he was going, I am really not sure what he would have done if they hadn't been willing to support him. And think about it, if you were in their shoes, wouldn't you want to know upfront? Good luck.

Every state is different. Most states for college students attending as an OOS student will not allow them to become residents, thus no voting rights. The main reason why is if they become a resident, than they are allowed to pay IS rates and not OOS, which can be tens of thousands of dollars a yr.

The rule of thumb is your mailing address must be yr round, living in a dorm does not allow you to have yr round, thus you do not have proof of residency to register.

Check with the state regarding residency. In the state that our DS attends as an OOS student, he would not be able to become a resident even though he has a 12 month lease off campus. The reason why, is they ask one important question to determine residency. Can you be claimed as a dependent of a non-resident? He is our dependent, and even though he has an apt., and has for 2 yrs., that state will not allow it, since Bullet and I are residents in another state claiming him on our taxes. Again, the reason why is to close the loophole for students trying to save tons of money in college. To give you an idea of the amount of money we would save as an IS, it is 28K a yr difference between IS and OOS. Our DD's college is 23K a yr difference. Multiply that by 4 yrs., and every state college with OOS students; you are talking millions of loss revenue for the schools every yr. VA has @ 16 state colleges, by VA law only 25% of the students can be OOS. Imagine, if all 25% became residents just because they went to school in VA.

Personally, I think that all MOC's are accustomed to 2nd timers, and understand that they may attend college OOS. They will not hold this against you, because in the end you are a constituent paying taxes to their state as a resident.

Thank you all for the helpful information! I guess i'll contact my MOC about where to get the nomination to make sure.

Actually, you do not need to contact any MOC. Just a 2 minute google search showed me this:

http://www.azsos.gov/election/forms/voterregistrationform.pdf

PROOF OF CITIZENSHIP REQUIREMENT
A complete voter registration form must contain
proof of citizenship or the form will be rejected. If
you have an Arizona driver license or nonoperating identification license issued after October 1,
1996, this will serve as proof of citizenship. If not,
you must enclose proof of citizenship with the
form. Please refer to the back of the form for a list
of acceptable documents to establish your citizenship.

Just looking at this, you would need to get a DL to be a resident of AZ, do you really want to go through this hassle as a freshman in college?
