Putting together my ASUs and I am trying to figure out if it's worth getting the service cap or just using the beret for now. Anyone know what events the service cap is preferably used over the beret?

I am already up around $500 for the whole deal and I was just wondering if the extra $80-100 is worth it.

For me yes, but for a brand new 2LT, depends on your risk tolerance.

FROM ALARACT 202/2008

"THE BLACK BERET AND SERVICE CAP ARE AUTHORIZED FOR WEAR WITH THIS UNIFORM. WHEN THE DRESS BLUE ASU IS WORN FOR EVENING SOCIAL OCCASIONS (AFTER RETREAT) COMMANDERS CAN DIRECT NO HEADGEAR REQUIRED."

What would the uniform for the dining in at your basic course?

What is a chance that you will have to attend an official ceremony or perform escort duties in ASU?

It comes down to how fast you can get a service cap if you need one. Don't forget, the service cap has branch specific band.

The black beret, for whatever reason, is going out of favor for officer wear of the ASU. At West Point, all instructors wear the service cap with ASUs.

It's just easier to get the service cap right away and have it sewn up.

I think the Beret as a uniform accessory is a joke. Forty Mission Crush looked a lot better.
