Just wondering if anyone has any info on obtaining the TWIC while stationed overseas. Has anybody done this? We have looked at the website and are trying to arrange a short window of time before Indoc. to pick up. We'd like to do an online app. because we'll only have time in the US to pick it up. Any advice or insight would be appreciated! Thanks!

I can only tell you the procedure from our own experience. The initial application and setting up of the appointment can be done online. The first visit included picture taking and fingerprints along with verification of appointment to KP. The second visit was then the pick up of the TWIC card itself.

I would actually call the Dept' of Homeland Security and see if they have a satellite office somewhere overseas where you reside. Other than that I have heard that you will spend part of your Thanksgiving and Christmas leave with the above 2 step process:rolleyes:

I'm sure you've figured out that you have to make two visits to do the TWIC card. An option would be to schedule the first appointment in New York City early morning, the day before Indoc, and then to do the second appointment on the first weekday liberty (... unfortunately this will probably thanksgiving).

If you live more than a couple hundred miles away from an enrollment center KP doesn't expect you to have a TWIC when you report, but like others have said they will make you do it over the holiday breaks, and ennoblement centers are only open on weekdays. We started thanksgiving break on a Friday, and one of my classmates had to stay until Monday to get her TWIC. That is a lot of time cut of thanksgiving break. So if you can front load the first visit, and only have to lose time on one of your breaks it will save some pain later.

Keep in mind almost every sport has some kind of get together the day before indoc, so try not to schedule it Wednesday afternoon.

Keep in mind the day before Indoc is the 4th of July. I am sure the TWIC center will be closed for the holiday.

TIWC

Kathyh-
If worse comes to worse and you can't get it done prior to INDOC, they will keep your DS/ DD on campus for an extra day during the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays to get it done. I know that isn't preferred as it takes a day away from each of those holidays, but at least it's an option.
I do know you will have to have DS/DD go to the TWIC office in person on two seperate occasions. It can't be done on line. Some folks on the west coast have to drive 2 to 3 states over to get to the closest TWIC office. I'm sorry it's such an inconvenience for you!

team picnics

The various teams usually host team picnics or barbecues the day before indoc starts. If you haven't been in touch with a coach and are hoping to play a sport reach out to them now and they will get you an invite.

sports get together before indoc??

I saw that you will be on the Cross Country and Track teams. Coach Lott is planning to have a picnic the day before Indoc. It may be around 3pm, but he is still finalizing the details. He will probably send out an email with the details to all those on the team as we get closer to Indoc.

Are the team picnics for the Athletes as parents should we make our own plans for the afternoon?

Our experience has been that they are for the players...not the parents. Most coaches want to make darn sure their players arrive on time for INDOC...so a party/BBQ the evening before is a good way to make sure that happens...plus it's a great way to meet other teammates, etc. before INDOC to meet a few kindred souls ahead of INDOC. Method to their madness here...parents don't much "count" most of the time. ha! These are usually excellent gatherings and I highly recommend attending if at all possible. Each coach has their own way of doing things, so perhaps some do invite parents...however, not all do...so check ahead!

WELCOME ABOARD CLASS OF 2016!

Thanks! I was hoping it was athletes. Now we can plan a fun evening celebration for us!

It is primarily for the student athletes but my experience is/was parents are invited and attend. the incoming PC's go one way usually and the parents the other. It's a place where the incoming PC's can meet and "fraternize" with their upper class teammates before indoc starts - so they can start to look out for each other. it's also a great place for parents to meet the parents of their son/daughter's teammates and start to get to know them so they too can communicate and look out for each other.

They are great friendly bar-b-ques usually and where you and your family will continue the transition into full fledged members of the KP family which then occurs generally starting at ~7AM the next morning....

WELCOME ABOARD CLASS OF 2016!

Not true for the football team, the parents were welcome along with the candidates

Same goes for track and cross country. Lots of parents last year. All are made to feel very welcome.

sailing

For the sailing get together on the night prior to INDOC, there is a cook out for the students AND their parents. I believe that all of the sports teams have something going on the night prior to INDOC- and moms and dads are definitely welcome to attend with their student! It's a fun evening... I encourage everyone to attend.

Thanks for the Cross Country and track information! We really look forward to meeting everyone and becoming part of the KP family.

lol... Okay back to the TWIC subject for a second. I will be able to do the online part and the first visit well before indoc., but not quite in time for a second visit to pick it up. Will any proof of the TWIC process stating that it is on its way suffice for when i report to indoc. or when i mail in the stuff that requires a copy of it along with passport? And if it is on its way when i arrive at indoc. can it be arranged to have it picked up at the academy? or will they allow me as a plebe to leave campus to pick it up at a TSA office in NY, or anywhere close to the academy?

Last year we had our son's TWIC sent to the office in Manhattan (I believe it was on 7th ave.) and picked it up the day before indoc. By the way, we had our first appointment in San Diego (we live in NM) and they WILL send your TWIC to a different center for pick up if you ask. We took the train into Penn Station and the office was very close (5-10 minute walk). It was a fairly easy pick up...I think it took about 30 minutes and we did have an appointment scheduled. Then we had a fun pizza lunch in the city. I would see if you can arrange this so you don't have to give up any of your Thanksgiving or Winter Break to go pick it up.

Yeah im going to have to go to LA for my appointment too. Did you really take a train? that's pretty cool, sounds a lot more interesting than a 7 hour plane ride. Anyways, thanks for the help I just hope it will ship before Indoc. so i dont have to give up my precious break time.

Ok, I was not very clear....lol. We FLEW to New York a day early and THEN took a train from Long Island into Manhattan. Honestly, a multi day train ride would be a little TOO interesting for me. Good lucK!
