I am just a freshman, and I am wondering if there are any tips that people on this forum can give me. Before you read on, I warn you that I have read through many of the threads on this forum, and that I know that none of the people on this forum can tell me that I am guaranteed to be qualified in the future or not. And yes, I have been told that I shouldn't worry about colleges right now, but truth is, I think it's better to be prepared ahead of time.
I had one B in my first two quarters, and straight A's in my third (my school college counselor told me that my school does not record GPA). I was in Fresh/Soph soccer last fall, and I am currently in JV golf. I am trying to make the varsity teams next year. I play second chair in the school band, and participate in the school bell choir. I am also part of the mentor program. Does the mentor program show leadership? Because it seems that I am lacking leadership. I plan on running for club leaders because it seems like class president and vice president is more of a popularity contest.
Are there any tips that people can give me? Any will be appreciated.

Try to win your school's nomination to Boys' State.

Seek leadership positions in your organizations.

Stay out of trouble----watch who you associate with and no underage drinking or other troublesome activities. If you are accepted to West Point, you will provide them with a copy of your police record. That always catches some candidates off guard.

stay the heck out of trouble, no getting into fights, detentions, ect.

Stay on top of your classes from the get-go. Yeah four years seems like a long time but push through it, trust me it helps.

Following that take the hardest possible classes you can, but be SMART about it. do not overload yourself cause it will/can hurt your grades if you end up taking a lot of hard courses and end up falling behind.

Volunteer work,

Club leadership positions, class leadership positions, check to see if maybe you class has Reps to a council of the school .

Not sure if this helps :/ but good luck the four years of high school!

To make up for that B (which is O.K, you can easily recover) take some more honors/AP classes, and in general, take all of the more difficult level classes your school offers.

ie: My sophomore year I took AP Trig/Calc A, as opposed to a year of Trig (which was the "lower" level class)

Essentially just work hard and be a good student, and don't get into trouble.
Learn to manage stress/excel under difficult conditions, it's a skill that will help you during your more difficult years at school (Jr. year/ Sr. year). And it's a good skill to have regardless.

Boys State is run during the summer after your Jr year. Don't stress about it now.
