I am 16 years old and really want to go to the academy. It has been my dream to attend the academy since 7th grade and I will do anything to get there. I am a varsity wrestler since my sophomore year and have a 3.5 GPA. I pride myself on my athleticism. I also volunteer every Sunday for 5 hours at my local hospital. I plan on finding more ways to help my community. I knew that I wanted to be in the military and the Coast Guard made more sense to me than any other service. I would much rather save lives than take them. Any advice on what I need to work on??? Feel free to email me information.

Thanks:)

Good luck. You are wise to start thinking ahead....you have some time to build up your academic and EC resume. Take the most challenging classes your school offfers and do well. Find a leadership role....class president, club founder, Eagle Scout, etc. It's not about piling on the ECs, but rather showing that you have what it takes to lead, and are worthy of being followed.

And, just an aside, take off any identifying information from your profile, such as your first or last name. I am assuming your user name has something to do with your personal info...if not, you're good. You may want to fly below the radar in the coming years. No need to identify anything that might come back to cause you grief, if and when you get in to an academy.

Looking good early on! Try to beef up that GPA with hardcore math and science. I sure wish I had taken calc :frown: Make sure your essays set you apart but aren't arrogant.

Some important points to consider after all:
-There are a whole mess of eagle scouts looking at the academy, drum majors, football captains, etc. applying. What makes you a unique person/leader?
-The thing about volunteering: 9 million hours of office work is no way the same as 10 hours of getting out there and making a difference. In other words, quality > quantity...
-A whole mess of people have 3.75+ GPAs. What makes your courses especially special?
-Why do you wanna be at the academy and a leader in the USCG? How has (or will) your high school experiences help you develop as an aspiring military officer?

When the time comes, TALK to coaches! That can help a whole lot.

Good Luck! :thumb:

I am taking two AP classes next year along with Pre-Calc and two varsity sports. I am also going to start training to become a lifeguard this summer. Thanks for the feedback, I'll start working on that stuff right away:) I can probably get a letter of recommendation from the hospital that I volunteer at as well. How do you change the username???

Thanks:)
