So a couple weeks ago, I got my NROTC acceptance letter and it told me that I also got into the LREC program! It's for China/Chinese.

I just would really like to get some information about it. I've been having a bit of trouble with actually getting any sort of response from my recruiting officer at my university...

How is LREC different for the normal NROTC program? Do I need to take any different classes? My major is International Studies and so I need to study abroad, when and for how long can I go for? I noticed that you can do a foreign exchange cruise for your First Class Cruise, is there a list of places that they go to?

I'm sorry, I just have so many questions and it's really hard to track down any answers.

My son is entering his fourth year in NROTC and is part of the LREC program, which really just means that - like you - he was one of the 15% of scholarship recipients who does not have a Tier 1 major. It also means that you cannot change your major from China/Chinese without permission. The Navy is giving you the scholarship to study that particular regional of the world/language. My son is also an international studies major with a focus on Africa/French. He studied abroad in Africa last semester. It wasn't a problem, other than doubling up on Naval Science courses during the fall in the year before his study abroad (the required Naval Science courses are offered just one semester each academic year so he had to complete the course he would have missed).

Other than that, there is no difference between my son's path and anyone else in NROTC. Just like everyone else in his unit, he will be placed in one of the four communities offered to those who commission through NROTC. He's hoping to be a pilot.

From what I have heard, the LREC scholarship students still have to take the calculus and physics classes. NROTC students can study abroad, they would probably just need to double up on Naval Science classes one semester.

That's correct. Navy Option LREC students will have to take the calculus and calculus based physics classes.
