Forbes Top 100...as expected

Hahaha.... this list is kind of funny. Awwww..... congrats to West Point.... though, so sweet for them.

First a Showtime special... now this.... "BEST YEAR EVER!"

Isn't this last year's list? All the rankings are the same as what was published last summer - thought the list came out each August? It says on it "values calculated June 11".

I love seeing the military academies on the "Best of whatever" lists. But there's about 20+ different "Best Colleges" lists out there. This one isn't really that impressive. The survey itself says:

Our annual ranking of the 650 best undergraduate institutions focuses on the things that matter the most to students: quality of teaching, great career prospects, graduation rates and low levels of debt.

Ummm; that's sort of something the military academies sort of excel at. (Why coast guard isn't higher; I don't know). Has anyone ever watch the movie with Tom Selleck "Mr. Baseball". When they were going to trade him to a japanese team, Tom Selleck used his stats as a defense.

Jack Eliot: I'm a World Series MVP!
Skip: That was four years ago, Jack.
Trey: You hit .235 Last season.
Jack Eliot: LAST SEASON, I led this team in ninth-inning doubles in the month of August!

Sometimes, stats just aren't that impressive. I would think that a military academy would have some of the best graduation rates; lowest (NO) debt; and great career prospects. (You're guaranteed a job for the next 5 years). In other words; this list was for what's important to a student. Sorry; but their opinion isn't really that important. I like seeing all the academies with good accolades. But leading the league in ninth-inning doubles in the month of August isn't that impressive.

That list is wacky. Nothing against USMA being number three; however, VMI as #65 in the country? I'm proud of my school and everything, but that's a little strange.

USCGA
Total Annual Costc: $4,600
In-State Tuitionc: $3,000
Out-of-State Tuitionc: $3,000
Percent on Financial Aidd: 0.0%
Percent Admittede: 25.0%
SAT Composite Rangef: 1150-1360
These numbers don't look right?

Hey, you only have to move up 96 spots!

The order is just great. Independent of where I think CGA should be, the order for a number of other schools is surprising. I think as Carnagie Mellon as a fine school.... and I find MANY schools ranked about it.

Forbes may want to use a different word.... "Best" doesn't seem to be accurate.

If sports teams were considered, Westpoint and Annapolis might just trade spots...

I agree. They even state this in the methodology section themselves.
Because of our emphasis on financial prudence, the zero-cost military service academies rank highly. West Point, which topped the list two years ago, ranks third this time, thanks to outstanding teaching (#3) and high alumni salaries (#8), while the Air Force Academy (#10) and the Naval Academy (#17) glide easily into the top 20. Even the less prestigious academies – the Coast Guard (#97) and the Merchant Marine (#158) — score well.

It's not about student opinion. It's about what you get for your effort, time, and money. The list is about value, which is probably the BEST measure of a college, because it measures the impact that institution will have on moving you toward a successful career and the lifelong impacts thereof.

I find it funny how people like CC will happily chime in on the threads poo-pooing a liberal arts degree because they don't set you up for success, but then not get on board with a system that analyzes which colleges DO set you up for success. What does it matter if a school has an outstanding reputation and produces a large number of PhDs and all those other useless metrics, if you can't get a job afterward? Or if you're 60 years old and still paying off debt?

That's why I can't figure out why CGA is 97.....

Debt: None.

Professors: Great

Job opportunities after: Great... 100% employed.

Also not sure where the yearly tuition came from.... suspect. Do I think an education at Carnegie Mellon is more valuable than one at VMI.... likely. Do I think an education at Harvard is more valuable than one at West Point? Probably... at least to the rest of the world....

Just suspect. Maybe people we asleep in the admissions office. I'd take offense to "prestige" mention as well.... but that's for another day....

The Association of Alumni and Dropouts of dear old Motley College are delighted to see we have once again been honored by Forbes, which ranks us among the top 570 schools in the land.

These numbers don't look right?

They're not. They eliminated the $3,000 deposit a few years ago.

That's why I can't figure out why CGA is 97.....

Especially as Princeton Review and US News has CGA as #1 ranked undergraduate college in the NE region.

New London— The U.S. Coast Guard Academy was recognized as one of the top institutions of higher learning by U.S. News & World Report, The Princeton Review and Forbes Magazine.

The academy was ranked first in the Regional Colleges (North) category in the 2012 edition of U.S. News and World Report’s Best Colleges issue for the second consecutive year. The academy is also featured in The Princeton Review’s Best in the Northeast section on PrincetonReview.com and ranked highly in Forbes Magazine’s America’s Best Colleges 2011 edition.

If it's about the best bang for your buck, I don't understand why Georgia Institute of Technology is not even on the list. It is ranked as the #4 best engineering school that's highest degree is a doctorate, #1 and #2 in a couple of fields like civil, bio-medical, and industrial/manufacturing engineering even over MIT (http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/rankings/engineering). And it was just named #2 school for best return on your investment because it's cheap for OOS and even cheaper for IS(the largest amount of debt you could come out with after 4 yrs without using any financial aid whatsoever would be about $10,000 less than a yr at most of the schools ranked in the top 100 on here), 71-79% receive some kind of financial aid(the state offers free tuition to IS kids who have a certain gpa), and very difficult to graduate from. People are impressed if you got in and employers are even more impressed if you graduated. Not saying it's the best and I can get it not being in the top 100 I guess, but the full list on Forbes went to 700 and it wasn't on it while UGA, Kennesaw State, and West Georgia was, come on, West Georgia? I can't believe RIT would be ranked #568. They certainly arent cheap, but I hear it's a good school so how are they ranked under FIT, Tuskegee, and Liberty? Something's up.

Even as a USNA grad, I find the above comment (from Forbes) insulting. It's not about "prestige." It's about the career choice you want. USCGA and USMMA are terrific, super-competitive schools charged with producing officers for their respective services.

The "big three" SAs are certainly larger, but I wouldn't say "more prestigious" -- other than maybe in the eyes of the idiots who wrote the comment.

Perhaps he meant it from the perspective that most Americans have of the SAs.
