I know that to go to a Prep School for a Service Academy you must be physically and medically qualified, but not academically qualifed.

What exactly does not being "academically qualified" mean? Does it fall under one specific thing like GPA, SAT/ACT? All together?

Who and How do they determine who goes to the Prep Schools? Is a Nomination required as well?

Thank you!

Army, Navy, and Air Force each have their own prep schools, and Coast Guard sends their preps to one of two military junior colleges. A student who has applied to the academy that the admissions officer feels would be qualified with an additional year of study could be offered a prep year. To go to a prep school a student must apply to the academy and be selected.

In addition, there are alumni foundation scholarships for each of the military academies which will help pay for a year of prep at a number of schools throughout the nation. Your best bet is to contact the admissions office of the academy you're interested in and ask them what is available.

No, you do not need a nomination to enter a prep school. You will need one to enter the academy the following year however. Generally, those offered prep school are good candidates who are weak in one or more areas. Prep school is intended to help strengthen the candidate in those areas (usually academic, but sometimes physically as well).

If you receive a nomination, but go to a Prep School, would that nomination stay with you or would you need to receive another?

You have to apply and receive another nomination the following year.

Also, ask if you are qualified for a Presidential nomination while attending a prep school (if I recall correctly, attending USMAPS grants you a Presidential nom).

I could get a Presidential Nom.

If I don't get accepted to USMA or the Prep school, what are other possible ways to be accepted?

I'm pretty sure a Presidential nom would only be from your parent(s) serving. You're probably thinking of say, a Secretary of the Navy nomination (for those in NAPS) or whatever the equivilent is for other academies.

My father is in the Army and is qualified. But you do not get a Presidential from attending a prep school.

How would you get a Sectetary of the (Army/Navy/etc) nomination?

You're automatically considered since you're in the Reserves at the official academy prep school. For example, I leave for the Naval Academy Prep School this July. I have to enlist in the Naval Reserves in the next few weeks. The issue is, there are approximately 250 Midshipman Candidates at NAPS (I believe the prep schools for USMA and USAFA are similar size. Not sure about USCGA or USMMA.). Going off the top of my head, I think there's only 85 possible nominations available from the Secretary of the Navy. That's why each person at at prep school is required to apply for a nomination from all 3 potential congressmen plus the VP.

I think USMAPS is 246 cadets. At the prep school, would I be able to apply for presidential again? Is it just from those 3 sources?

I think you need to get to the horse's mouth for your question. I suggest you contact your Admissions Officer at USMA. If you don't know who that is, go to the admissions section of the usma.edu web site.

If you're worried about getting a MOC nomination...I wouldn't be too worried. Typically candidates who are attending an academy prep school have a pretty high rate of getting nominations.

This is all assuming you're on the ball, make deadlines, etc. If you're at, say USMAPS, realize how much that USMA has already invested in you. MOCs will see that too.

Okay, thank you very much!:)

Can anyone tell me about those enlisted slots I heard about?
I heard that there are 100 reserved slots for enlisted soldiers. How does that work out, exactly? Are they strictly reserved and always get 100 soldiers?

Thing is, the Admissions Officer I contacted and asked about USMAPS told me that you are considered in reserve and is, therefore, paid AND eligible for a presidential nomination. But evidently, my memory can be blurred due to time (this conversation took place some 11 months ago). The Superintendent's nomination could make sense, but I think I heard him saying Presidential Nomination due to the USMAPS reserve status.

Again, all I'm saying could be wrong - better to ask the SA directly. By the way, they DID mark something on my file that I would be interested in going to the preparatory school if I didn't get an appointment in the first try. (He did say I was overqualified due to my SAT scores, which were something just above the 600s on Math and Verbal.)

What's over qualified scores for the ACT?

I don't have stats for USMAPS, but at USAFA Summer Seminar they told us the ranges for USAFAPS are about 21-26 for English and 21-27 Math. I'd be willing to guess that the general range is about the same for the other academy prep schools.

Is it solely based on test scores? Or can it be gpa, etc?

You can also be 3 qualified and still be offered civil prep. Just a hunch, but I'll bet several 3Q's were offered that this year
