North Georgia is a great school.
My son just graduated Norwich(another SMC) with a criminal justice degree. Great school and program. They have a great minor available in cyber crime.

I don't think you could go wrong at any of the SMC's. Has your daughter considered TAMU? http://corps.tamu.edu/ . Texas A&M does not have a criminal justice major. It does, however, have a great deal to offer in terms of size, types of majors, national and international stature, etc. However North Georgia or VMI are smaller and students, particularly first and second year students, probably have a greater chance of interaction with faculty. Financing college is also an issue. Out of state students who join the Corps of Cadets at TAMU get in-state tuition. Our daughter, an out of stater, just finished her first year at TAMU and is now studying in Tunisia.
I haven't served in the military so you should consider my comments in that context. Much as with law school, to be successful in law enforcement you don't have to major in criminal justice. Of course, it doesn't hurt, but it certainly isn't required - and indeed I did not. I have, however, served as a police officer in Texas and New Mexico, taught at the Texas Department of Public Safety Academy, taught classes to the FBI, DEA, Homeland Security Investigations (formerly known as Immigration and Customs Enforcement, formerly known as Customs Office of Investigations), Border Patrol, New Mexico State Police, and others. I've been a prosecutor since 1987 and done cases ranging from conspiracies involving thousands of pounds of cocaine to deer homicide (poaching on a federal wildlife enclave) and from the export of national security information and training (stealing the Army Special Forces classified tactics, techniques, and procedures utilized in the Special Forces Advanced Reconnaissance, Target Analysis, and Exploitation Techniques Course [SFARTECT] to Turtle Excluder Device (TEDS) cases or starting fires on federal parks and forests. I've worked with federal, state, county, local, and tribal officers. One FBI agent had a doctorate from MIT in aeronautical engineering and some officers, well, they didn't. The point being, if your daughter finds an institution she is comfortable with, she'll do fine in law enforcement - and I suspect, in the military.

DS visited all 6 SMCs. They all are different. They all are competitive. He was accepted to all 6. DS was accepted by all 6. His stats are 3.2 unweighted GPA, 1210 SAT, 26 ACT. He has held leadership positions in NJROTC. He lettered in baseball, Cross Country, and Swimming. He maxed all catagories in the Army PFT. He has over 140 hours of volunteering for Bright Futures scholarships in Florida.
He did not rate a national based ROTC scholarship. He was just offered a campus based ROTC scholarship to North Georgia. He is mulling over going out of state and going into debt, or staying in Florida and working his way through college. He would also work to get an Army ROTC scholarship from the local college.
We do not have the funds to send him out of state unless he received the ROTC scholarship. None of the colleges came up with anything remotely making it possible to attend.
No SMC is a bad choice, but DS would rank them as follows:
VMI $18.5k per year
North Georgia $18.6k per year
TAMU $22k per year
Norwich $18k per year
The Citadel $47k per year
VT $31k per year
The costs were after scholarships. For the most part DS wanted a college with a rural setting, smaller campus and student body. As a cross country runner, he looked at each campus as a potential running course.
TAMU isn't a runner's paradise, but DS liked the way they ran their corps.
North Georgia has many new buildings: residence halls, dining commons, bookstore, cadet admissions, etc.
Have your DD visit during one of their National Leadership Challenge. DS went there in Spring 2011.
I have visited there twice. The food was good with lots of choices. It is likely that my DS will accept his 3 AD for the fall.
If you are out of state don't expect much in the way of scholarships. They really don't have many to offer incoming students. They have several scholarships to those that perform well once they attend.
If you stay overnight yourself, find a bed and breakfast. Avoid Super 8 in Dahlonega. The Days Inn is not much better. You can try the Holiday Inn Express. I have not stayed there.

As someone else stated everything there is brand new too. As for the Super 8...I actually stayed there and I didn't notice anything unusual. But then again, All I need is a place to lay my head down and I'm fine

Baretta-I cant believe with those stats he didnt get a rotc scholarship!. Thanks for the input guys. She got a letter from them saying if she goes there she will get instate tuition. She really loves criminal justice and has been adamant for yrs thats what she wants to do
