Prior Service items

Does any prior service selects for either the Prep or the Academy itself have a list of stuff they are required to bring (issued stuff mostly). I'm more curious than needing to know, mainly because when I see videos of people on I-Day, they have only 1 to 2 bags. Which boggles my mind because when I PCS'd to Elmendorf I had 3 bags, I know you won't need much civvies/luxuries but still all these uniforms take up space. Another thing is, has anybody ever seen someone come to I-Day/Prep School with a fully packed duffle bag?

P.S, I haven't been selected/accepted to the Academy, this is just some info I would like to know so I could get my ducks in line for that day, like I heard chloroframs aren't allowed till after Recognition, so I have to buy some non-gloss leather shoes.

Thanks, A1C Bourdeau

I am not an expert on "LEADS" applicants, but my understanding is that you are no different than any other new appointee. You will be issued anything and everything you need. You don't need to buy service dress shoes or anything else.

Now; FWIW: You're not the first person to apply prior-enlisted; so when the time comes if you're fortunate enough receive and appointment; there will be plenty of prior enlisted cadets who will be able to assist you if and when needed.

No; no one is foolish enough to come in with a full duffel bag. They come in with the clothes on their back and a toilet kit and their paperwork. They will be issued everything they need on day one.

I know you said you haven't received an appointment yet, and that you're just trying to get your ducks lined up...... But there are NO DUCKS that you need to line up. The things you need to get lined up, are the things to help you to receive an appointment. What to bring, IF, you receive an appointment is nothing you have to even think about. At least not until you receive an appointment. I'm sure you are excited about applying, but I suggest exercising your efforts on receiving the appointment first. Once you have that, there are plenty of current cadets who came in on the LEADS program that can assist you with such questions. But no, you don't have to buy any shoes, and NO, you aren't going to bring everything you own with you to inprocessing day. Just try receiving an appointment first.

Thank you so much for the reply. I'm working on the nomination, going to be talking to my Squadron Commander (for the actual nom). And my Deputy Commander (1st Lt who graduated from the Academy and Prep School, played football for both schools), who will hopefully give me a Letter of Recommendation, haven't been able to talk to either for the last 2 weeks since our base has been in Exercise.
And from what I read, priors were supposed to bring our uniforms (without name tapes/stripes) and we would be issued mess dress/parade dress, etc.

I agree with Christcorp 100%. Nowhere in your checklist does it tell you to worry about what to bring/how to pack/and so on and so forth for one reason and one reason only: you haven't received an appointment yet. I see you're prior-enlisted, so I'm sure you know the key to "getting stuff done" in the military: PRIORITIZATION! Worry about the important things first, such as applying. After that, IF it's meant to be, everything will fall into place for you.

Considering the prior service appointees need to bring the entire clothing issue with them (minus the enlisted service coat), I will most likely be bringing a fully packed duffel bag and a backpack with the rest of the items on the packing list.

I mean... that just makes sense, right?

Haha that was what I was talking about, everything issued to us is quite a bit of stuff, I wonder what the cadre will think seeing someone with a duffel bag, (Other than that their prior enlisted).

When I got to the prep, we had to report in uniform, as with any PCS, and I had all my stuff packed in my green duffel. You won't really be in basic as a prior coming to the prep school right away. You are here earlier than the directs. You have time to get your room in order and unpack.

Anyway, when you go to the hill, things are a bit different. You are expected to report in civilian clothes, even if you are a prior or preppie. The only difference is that when you are a prior or a preppie, you have uniforms to bring. We had the cadet-commander of basic training come down and tell us that they will be informing their cadre not to be stupid about the preppies. He said that he understands we have uniforms and no one else is going to have that, and that we might have a backpack AND our duffel.

So, I am not quite sure how I-Day is going to work, but whenever I get internet access again after BCT, I can try and get back in contact with you about how it went! =P
