My son leaves in 3 weeks for CULP to Tunisia and he doesn't have much information still.

So for anyone who has gone or has info, help please!!

Any suggestions on packing lists? How about cash or travlers checks? How does the cadet get from the Louisville airport to Fort Knox?
Do cadets bring cell phones?

These are only a few questions I can quickly think of. We will take all info we can get!

Sent you a PM

Jcleppe, unless there's something personal or specifically directed to Tunisia, copy me on that PM, pretty please. I was asking myself the same questions.

cjs, here's a link to an article in the Travel section of last Sunday's New York Times, "Tunisia After the Revolution".

Hey there,

Nothing personal in the PM, I was just sharing their frustration on the lack of info so far, seems like your son is in the same boat. I talked to my son and he has emailed his contact asking again for a packing list and more detailed travel info. When he gets any information back I will pass it along to all.

Let us know if your son hears anything as well, if they don't hear anything I guess we just have them throw a toothbrush in their pack and send them on their way, a true adventure.

Will share if and when I learn anything. May be too late to help cjs, as the departure date is not for another two months.

Thanks for the link about Tunisia.

Guess we may hear some info before some of you. I'll be sure and post whatever I can.
Checked with AT&T and of course Tunisia is one of the countries they don't offer an international texting package to. Did find out that received texts / are free and sent texts are 50 cents.

Realize that their electric is 220v so he needs an adaptor/converter to charge anything.

Tunisia prohibits any money to ever leave their country so can't order any before hand.
Alex has been told that his diet will be full of Seafood. Luckily He does enjoy that, I would be screwed!

He got his flight info today. Has a 7:30 am flight departing from the airport near our home with a stopover in Chicago and then on to Louisville.

Hey Everyone,

DS just received his airline travel information for his CULP assignment yesterday. He leaves June 10th for Ft. Knox and then on to Tanzania, Africa.

Has anyone receive any packing information for while they are at Ft. Knox? CCS has been pretty good about what they must wear while on the assigned mission. He will be teaching English to 5-12 years olds. But other than that, not sure what to bring. He has 2 sets of fatigues and PT gear that has issued to him from the AROTC battalion.

There has been no contact from the latest AROTC contigent leader. From what I understand they have been shuffling the assignments around alot (on a 3rd leader now).

Anyone have any experiences that they would like to share?

My son is currently in Tunisia, Africa on his CULP assignment so I'll be happy to let you know what they needed for Ft. Knox.

They needed their ACU's and brown tee shirts as well as PT gear. Also a towel is needed. Bedding was issued.

It's hard to believe that my son will be home on June 6th. It has been the experience of a lifetime for him along with lots of work and I can't wait to see all his pictures when he returns. I only get him for a night before he departs back to school for a ROTC event so he will have to talk quickly!

I hope your son enjoys his time.

My DD went to the Philippines last year. Many of the kids took laptops. It turned out Skype was far better for communications than a mobile phone. In some places even video conferencing worked well.

Thanks for the information and helping us piece everything together.

Did your DS bring a computer? DS said no computers can be brought?

I was not planning on purchasing phone coverage either. They said that they had internet cafes that they could go to. Am I being too hard core?

My DD did bring her computer. I suspect these rules differ by trip. The hotels my DD stayed in while on her trip all had Internet and that proved to be a much easier way to communicate than trying to get our cell phone to work (differing standards).

It all depends on the trip. Each country seems to have differing guidelines.

One of the cadets at my sons's school is going to Cambodia I believe and was told to bring nothing of value, not even a cell phone.

In Tunisia, The cadets were told not to post their exact location while on Facebook. They did not have Internet access in the beginning of the trip anyway. They go to the school they are teaching in wearing civilian clothes and change into their ACUs there. They do PT not wearing their Army PT clothes. They have to adhere to the dress guidelines of the country and not wear anything that would make them appear too American.
The group that is in Costa Rica, whole separate set of rules for instance. They can wear their Army PT clothes. You can go ahead and wear your college tee shirt, etc.

It all depends on where the cadets are staying in their host countries as wifi, etc. they will let you know what to bring and not bring.
