Pardon the rant- but: Are you kidding me?! I almost never drink soda's and couldn't drink a Big Gulp if my life depended on it, but if Bloomberg can unilaterally decide this, then what else? Has he been to Katz Deli lately? or is Katz next? If he wants the majority of NYC citizens to not be overweight then- get them off their bubble butts and run, bike, play outside and not on the computer etc. If the residents of the city stand for this- you are really just out of your mind because you just bought into the idea, part and parcel, that the Government can and will control anything it chooses about your life.

BTW- the picture above is from Katz Deli on Houston Street which IMHO is the greatest deli in the world. The Pastrami sandwich rivals sex as one of the great discoveries in life. It's also a heartattack on a plate. So if the mayor can unilaterally decide that you can't buy a "Big Gulp because it could make you fat- then why not tell you that you can't have a Pastrami sandwich?

Ok - off my soap box- let the rumpus begin (but try not to insult each other when you do so ok?):biggrin:

A few observations:

1) People over 30 should not be allowed to look at this picture
2) In real life, the sandwich is larger than it appears in the picture.
3) Under no circumstances should anyone at any age look at this picture before breakfast.
4) I'm starting to get dizzy looking at the picture.
5) Obscured at the top left of the photo is the accompanying dish of pickles: sour, half-sour, and pickled green tomatoes.
6) The waiters at Katz's are not as surly as they used to be.
7) If you can't insult your friends who can you insult?
8) There are so many milligrams of sodium in this meal the picture alone will raise your doctor's blood pressure (even without the crispy french fries)
9) As a small boy I learned that you can counteract any negative side effects by imbibing a recuperative beverage: Dr. Brown's Cel-Ray Soda.

It's a great place - as EDelahanty says- it's larger in real life and the pickles alone are worth going in for. Lysinopril and Simvastatin :eek:are the only things that allow me to eat this stuff when I get into the City. Like I said Katz maybe the premier deli in the country if not the Universe- (as long as you don't mind crowds and nobody is confused about this being heath food!) But if the Mayor is so concerned about blubber that he is now gonna dictate drink portion sizes that can be offered over ruling the consumer's choice- then how long before that Pastrami sandwich becomes the size of a cocktail weenie at the direction of hiz honor?

BTW- any KP or USMA parent flying thru or near NYC- if you don't take the subway to the 2d Ave or Delancey Street stops and schlep over to Katz Deli at least once while your kid is being held captive, then you are making a serious culinary error! :wink:
 
I read about this in the paper this morning. Interesting that you can still buy large sodas at say, a grocery story, but not at a fast food place or deli. :rolleyes:
 
The proposal defines sugary drinks as beverages that are "sweetened with sugar or another caloric sweetener that contain more than 25 calories per 8 fluid ounces and contains less than 51 percent milk or milk substitute by volume as an ingredient."

It would impact drinks sold in containers larger than 16 ounces, but would not impact the sale of diet soda or dairy-based drinks.

Sounds like he didn't want to take on the bars and coffeehouses, just the fast food joints. I can think of a lot of Starbucks drinks that are worse than a Big Gulp, not to mention some adult beverages...

Smacks of politics more than nutrition.

BTW, I almost shorted out my laptop drooling over the sandwich...
 
A very entertaining and wise poster, Jamzmom, said she would sell her mother to get a Katz location near her. She also added her mother would understand since she has eaten there herself! :yllol:

I miss her wit. So, YO Jamzmom, don't be a stranger!

And with an endorsement like that it has to be included in my next trip to NYC!

Going by what I witnessed two weeks ago while in Manhattan Mayor Bloomberg would really flip if he saw us in the middle of the country where we drive everywhere!
 
Proving the utter idiocy of Politicians- yesterday- [I]one day after proposing a ban[/I] (in restaurants but not in convenience stores so the "Big Gulp" is safe but the "Supersized" soda at Mickie D's is verboten) on the sale of sugared drink sizes over 16 oz in a "fight against obesity"- Mayor Bloomberg signed a proclamation designating it as "National Donut Day":

"So it was ironic that the mayor signed a proclamation marking National Donut Day.
Supersized doughnuts were used as props during the Manhattan ceremony marking the 75th annual national day honoring the confection.
The event at Madison Square Park also featured the proclamation signed by Bloomberg."

Curious, what about restaurants, will they have to stop giving re-fills for sodas, i.e., sorry you had 2 already, I have to cut you off now or give you only diet/water drinks.

This is utterly insane and a waste of tax dollars regarding this legislation.

I LMAO when I saw this on tv because they talked about movie theaters would be included, the video feed showed the bag of popcorn next to the soda. What's next outlawing the popcorn too?


OBTW the bag of popcorn probably had more calories than the soda.

Been going there since I was a teenager. The owner Sam Brummer, a Polish immigrant landed on Omaha Beach on D-day.
