My doctor and insurance are giving me a hard time about getting a physical for my son because his last one was in August of 2011. What should I do? The only shot he received was the DPP. No other vaccinations have been given. I am at a lost.

Any shots he's lacking will be given to him on I-day - and then some. I don't recall my 2/C having to get another physical after her appointment.

Call admissions to confirm.

My 3/C got shots and TB test prior to I-Day, but no physical. The only physical he got was the one required to get the appointment.

If he has an appointment, then he previously passed his physical during the application process through DODMERB. Who is asking him to have another one before I-day, never heard of that before?

Have you looked into your county's health dept.? That was going to be my plan if DS was not able to get his shots from his former pediatrician. How the insurance would work I have no idea. But, as it has been said, he can receive them on I day although he may add sore arms to everything else that day. Our kids are tough.

Insurance

The insurance is likely saying no because they only pay for one "Well Being" physical a year. The doctor shouldn't care as long as he/she gets paid (totally out of your pocket). Tell them you are willing to do that and you might get a better answer. Ant don't let the gate keeper at the front desk tell you no, ask to speak direct to doctor.

I may be missing something here, but why does he need another physical? My DS simply made an administrative appointment to pick up the immunization/ vaccine sheet after they filled it out and to get the tuberculosis test (PPD) and then return skin check for the same. If your DS passed his DoDMERB physical and is an otherwise normal 18 year old kid and decent athlete, I'm sure he's good to go, and I would not think one would have to worry about another physical.

On a related note, I did read that it's suggested to have a dental appointment a couple months before going to deal with possible fillings, wisdom teeth, etc., primarily to avoid unpleasant dental procedures during plebe summer. My DS went in April and checked out just fine. Right now he's working out a few times a day, golfing, watching movies, reading and hanging with his friends, all without a single thing left on his to-do list for the next four weeks. All the hard work this past year paid off!

In my DS's case, a full and complete physical had to be given BEFORE any vaccinations were administered (Doctor's policy & liability issue). He too had his most previous physical less than 12 months prior, but luckily insurance picked it up because of the calendar year timeframe.

DODMerb Should be the only required and submitted?

Health Dept

Our DS got his records from the pediatrician and took them to the Health Dept. For a kid who is healthy, surprised how many vaccines he did need updated. Our health dept was a bit inept at figuring out how to file with our insurance, so I just had him use my HSA account. A bit over $400 for the 6 shots and TB test.
I guess if we were indigent, it would have been close to free? That is another subject!
Also, he did feel a bit poorly for a day or so with all those vaccines entering his system. Nothing debilitating, but would hate to be I-Day + and hot sun.
Anyways, pediatrician suggested the health dept due to having the vaccines he probably did not carry.
It worked out great and gave him the experience and adventure of seeing government employees at work-sort of. I am sure he will see a lot of this bureaucracy in action during the next 9 years or more.

Shots

Everything worked out. He actually didn't need a physical but his Doctor would not give him the shots unless he had a "well visit" He got the visit and the shots so now he can sit back and relax until I-Day and not have to worry about receiving so many shots on that day!
