Two historical books on Afghanistan I recommend are:
The Great Game: the Struggle for Empire in Central Asia by Peter Hopkirk
A non-fiction book which focuses on the competition between Russian and England for influence and control of the region. This provides an excellent background on why Afghanistan (and indirectly Pakistan) are such difficult places.
The Afghan Campaign by Steven Pressfield
A fictional account of a young soldier in the army of Alexander the Great. Pressfield is a former Marine and a great storyteller. This and other historical fiction by him are well researched (Gates of Fire, about Thermopylae, is also a fine book)
