Injury after assignment

My son broke his leg in a soccer game after he had accepted his assignment. If the doctors determine him to not be fit enough for BCT, can the admissions department deny him acceptance into the Academy?

How close is he to full recovery? I am no expert, but I have heard of kids being medically turned back then coming back the following year. My son has a friend that this occurred with.

You need to report the injury to DoDMERB. They will guide you from there. DS broke his hand last year and was cleared before I-Day. If your son is not cleared, he may have to reapply next year. Best wishes.

If your son hasn't already, he should call his AFA admissions counselor to discuss his situation. He doesn't want to show up on I Day and spring a broken leg on them, no matter how well HE FEELS it has healed. I think there is even something written in the appointment acceptance that he had to sign that states any changes to his medical situation have to be reported.

But yes, the AFA can deny admittance if they feel his medical situation is such that he can't meet the physical demands of BCT and the AFT/PFT (aerobic and physical fitness tests) he will have to pass every semester as well as the physical standards of the AF. Kids get turned back every year for medical reasons. Since your son got hurt before reporting and taking the oath, its possible he'll have to reapply and get DoDMERB clearance again or a waiver. Generally, if a basic gets hurt during BCT and gets turned back, a spot will be held for him/her the following year as long as he/she can meet the medical standards after rehab etc.

Good luck to your son! I hope he gets to go this year!

Our DS broke his collarbone skiing in February, after being offered his Appointment. We had to notify DoDMERB, they withdrew the offer and put it on "hold" until we could submit a letter from his doctor saying he was released for any and all physical activity. He underwent surgery, a plate was affixed to the collarbone, bone growth stimulators were worn 24/7, and he was healed by May. The Offer of Appointment was then reinstated in time for I-Day (2010). We were told that if he was unable to perform all physical activity prior to I-Day, he would have to reapply the following year. Best of luck to your son. Your post didn't say exactly when this happened, so we hope he is healed by now.

He broke his leg May 12th. He received an unconditional release from his Orthopedist and has yet to be sent home. The rep we spoke to from DoDMERB said they would evaluate him when he got there but we haven't heard a peep from anybody and we see his pics on WebGuy (thankfully). I assume they intend to keep him.:thumb:

That's great news! I know I didn't post in this thread, but I did read it and wondered what happened. How exciting!

That seems like a good assumption at this point. Good luck!

Yep, he's good. You would have heard from him on I-Day saying "please come pick me up". Since you didn't get that, he's in the clear. Hopefully all goes well during second Beast. Good luck to you and him.

Yesterday, during intermurals, he broke his collarbone, is scheduled tomorrow for surgery and should be home by next week.

Talk about bad luck! Sorry to hear this. Hopefully he heals quickly and well so he can join the class of 2017.

That is a bummer. Will pray for a speedy recovery. Hopefully he still has a plan B for this school year. He will, if medical cleared, have a spot in the class of 2017 without reapplication.

Oh...I'm so sorry to hear that. How did he do it? Can I guess...ultimate frisbee? Will he require surgery and if so, will he do it at home or at the Academy? I assume he'll have a medical turn back and the opportunity to return next year. I hope his spirits are high and he just rolls with it. Best wishes!

PS On another note, it is early enough that he may be able to enroll for the fall semester at another university (maybe one he was accepted to but declined to attend the Academy). This has happened in the past, and I know a cadet who was able to get into a highly competitive university very late in the game...I guess admissions officers will make exceptions for cadets in this position. Best of luck and keep us posted on his condition!

Oh my word, how unlucky can one kid get?!?!?! Here's hoping and praying for a speedy recovery and that he is still able to go to his Plan B. Good luck with everything.
