I-Day Question

I can't imagine that they wouldn't let him keep it. However, it's one more thing to lug around on Day 1 in the heat and humidity and crush of his seabag where it could be damaged so, if he can go without it for a couple of days, I'd suggest mailing it.

I am sure he can bring it and they would let him keep it. Not sure if they do this anymore, but our first Sunday the Chaplains handed out new Bibles to all the Plebes who wanted them. Current Mids might be able to confirm if they still do this. To be honest I would be surprised if in the first few days he even thinks about looking at it. Yes, if he is religious he will find a few minutes each day to say some prayers when the lights go out or he is standing in formation, but if it can wait until the first care package then he won't have to lug it around and it won't get damaged.

I'm about 95% sure they hand out Bibles first Sunday if you want one.

Yes, your plebe can bring a bible on I-day

Yes to bringing a bible on I-day if your plebe wants to have one with them. Ours carried a backpack with a calculator (for placement tests), case with toothbrush/shaving gear, etc., his bible, his cell phone/charger and an extra pair of compression shorts.

He wore a polo shirt, shorts and his running shoes - looking around, that was definitely the "uniform of the day", and I remember thinking that they all looked remarkably similar to the new batch of kindergarteners at school each year. Obviously older, but with that same expression -a mixture of excitement, anticipation and apprehension!

Wont they issue a toothbrush? I just dont want to bring it if they will already issue it...?

yes, you will be issued a toothbrush. you guys will be issued everything you could possibly need to live for the next 2 months and then some.

Yes you will be issued a toothbrush and everything you could possibly need. You could really show up naked and be fine (I don't advise this!). Read some of the old posts on here and it will tell you what to bring. In all honesty a polo shirt (tucked in), shorts, and sneakers are a good uniform for checking in. Bring a back pack with the minimums... cell phone and charger (recommend labeling them all), compression shorts, some pictures (our detailers eventually let us put a few on our bulletin boards after a few weeks), extra tshirts, underwear, and socks. The later can wait for the first care packages if you want.

I met with a parents group just this last week. They said to definitely not bring extra t shirts, compression shorts, toothepaste, etc. Were they being over cautious?

Eh. You don't need any of those things, but none of them are things that you'd catch any flak for bringing either. I wouldn't bother bringing extra T-shirts (I assume you mean white crew necks for undershirts?), but the issued compression shorts are mediocre at best if you want to bring some you like. Bringing your own toiletries should be fine, but they'll give you plenty of toothpaste, deodorant, etc.

The worst that can happen if you bring extra stuff like that is it gets left in your bag and you don't see it until the Ac year.

I'm debating on whether I want to bring my current running shoes or buying new ones. My current ones are nike "lunar flys" and are a bright blue. Will the detailers give me a hard time about them?

There have been so many disparities on this topic based upon info from the Academy, this site, parent handbooks, and current mids with whom my DS has spoken:

Some say bring nothing but your running shoes on your feet and the clothes on your back.

Some say bring that plus a few days of toiletries.

And other say those plus a few days of Ts, briefs and socks, and some say even compression shorts.

Can it be safely said that all the above are correct, depending on your detailers/platoon/company?

My DS has resigned himself to his running shoes on his feet, clothes on his back and a zip lock bag with mini-travel toiletries. We've heard recent stories of some detailers confiscating compression shorts brought with you and that underwear/socks are unnecessary. The only reason he's bringing the toiletries is, well, if he needs them for a couple days, he'll be glad he has them. Otherwise, that $10 worth of toiletries can be immediately trashed. We're confident he'll receive underwear and socks, and we'll mail his compression shorts and some of his boxer briefs the day we leave.

Agree with AF6872 on the body glide and compression shorts. Other than food, that was all my mid asked us to send.

I have two pairs of running shoes, one is orange and green. The other is yellow and blue. The grey and white ones looked stupid, so I went for it and as long as I run well I don't think it should be a problem. And if it is, well they can harass me but they cannot stop time. :shake:

AF is correct your time will come. As a parent I've learned that life durring and after the Academy is changing sets of milestones for your child. Today you are worried about I-Day and the color of sneakers. Tomorrow will bring the Academic year and new challenges that make I-Day look minor. Each succeding year has it's challanges and milestones. Graduation apprears on the horizon with amazing speed.

You are in for a unique and amazing ride. The best advice I can give to incoming parents is to be a good listener and offer advice only if asked. You are one of the few places your MIdshaipman can vent their frustrations and anxieties. They may tell you something that seems like a crisis today and when you ask them about it next week they are mistified as to what you are talking about. Learn that when they vent to you, they got it out of their system and have moved on. You the parent are left chewing on this for sometimes weeks until you figure out what is going on. It's a hell of a ride.

And besides, USNA and your detailers will have that "looking stupid" thing covered. (Son, meet your Dixie cup cover. . .).

Try hard, stay motivated, keep a sense of humor (on the inside), support your classmates, and you'll be good to go.
