Does a cadet need a US Passport for entry into the UK or will a military ID and travel orders be sufficient.

All my trips to the UK on orders have required an Official Passport (the red kind, not the blue kind). USMA can arrange to have the passport made. In a pinch, a tourist passport (blue) can work, though it can raise a lot of questions. The UK is pretty strict with their borders. I've been questioned pretty thoroughly even with my ducks in a row and all the right documents.

Are you talking orders for duty? Or travel while on leave?

Technically, no. But as a rule, West Point will have you get a tourist passport or give you an official one depending on why you're going.

We went TDY to Spain in March and were told to have tourist passports. I know of others going TDY to other places with official passports.

Regardless, if the trip is sponsored by West Point, they will want you to have some kind of passport as a precaution in case you end up or have to go somewhere you weren't expecting.
