Leaving for USAFAPS in nine days. I'm writing my name on all the tags on my clothes. Should I be writing my name in my shoes too? I have a pair of tennis shoes that I'm taking as well as a pair of standard issue black shoes that my ALO bought for me at McConnell AFB.

Thanks!

Not too sure how it is in prep school but at the academy, DS had to mark everything with his serial number including shoes. We tried to mark dark items with silver/white permanent markers.
I'm sure you'll be instructed soon enough.

Hmmm I imagine it's about the same. Should I be taking a black and silver/white permanent marker then? Or did they have the markers there? Thanks for your response.

It probably wouldn't hurt to bring a black and silver sharpie, but they're not a necessity. It looks like there's a base exchange right next to the P and I'm sure there will be a few trips to it during bmt for similar items.

Sounds good, thanks! See you in a week.

AF uses a similar marking method for all items. I noticed this when DD came home from the Academy the first time. AF calls this a "Laundry Mark" at least this is what it was called in the stone age when I went to Basic. It is comprised of the first initial of your last name and the last for digits of you social security number. So for example John Doe's could be D1234...
I don't recall ever marking my shoes in basic training but it may be done now days. I always sent several black sharpies with my kids. Now whether they got to keep them or not is another thing:wink:

They are still called laundry marks. They are still in that same format as well. Just pack whatever is on the packing list, and if it didn't tell you on the checklist to mark your items prior to you arriving, then I wouldn't do it quite yet.

Where on the clothing does the marking go?

Shirts:
On the back inside collar, just above the tag. If the material is too dark, you can also place it on your tag.

Shorts:
Inside of the back part of your waistband or on the tag.

Socks:
I laundry marked the inside heal of my socks.

Use your best judgement. It's primarily so that the laundry staff can identify whose items belong to who. Make it easy to find, but not visible when wearing it.
