Daddy's, don't let your daughters paint their toenails

Received eight letters from our DD after we returned home from our week long vacation today. She wanted to feel, in some small way, feminine during BCT so she had a pedicure on the Tuesday prior to I day painting her toenails bright orange. For some reason, she thought her toenails would be immune from inspection from her cadre....wrong assumption. They were issued flip flops and the evil toenails were spotted immediately and held up as a bad example to the rest of the flight. She said she was told to scrape them with a knife but was given a reprieve to find her own solution. I guess the lesson is, don't get any ideas on feeling feminine during BCT.

Everything else is just swell! Having a great time at Camp BCT...toughest test so far in her young life. Extremely difficult but manageable. Suddenly, she is enjoying church much more than she had in the past and a lot of my minute lectures are being recalled with great clarity after drawing shrugs and yawns just a couple of weeks ago. One thing is clear, she loves her squad mates and the quality of their character....awsome!

Anything that would give a basic pleasure will be taken away. She was noticed in the inspection which was for health and hygene reasons, whichis for their own good.

As a woman that made me cry out for her, especially since this was a salon pedicure, not done by herself (Every woman understands that)! I would have searched down the maintenance crew on the grounds for sandpaper if I couldn't find nail polish remover before the knife. I honestly can hear that knife scraping and feeling my cuticles cutting in my mind right now!

When my son was at Basic Training (active duty enlisted), he enjoyed chuch lots too. :smile: I think it is one of the few times that they able to focus on something other than marching and such.

Yep, my wife cried too when she heard it. The pedicure was the last rodeo of girliness for my wife and two daughters. My DD wanted something to physically remind her of her Mom and Sis and being a girl in a very non girl environment...lesson to all, those who love to paint their nails anyway!
 
Now Now. This is the modern military. I think it's only fair to remind Dads (And Moms), to tell their SONS not to get their toenails painted either.

You must've been in the backroom (closet??) yesterday. I was chatting with my C2C (Jack's Valley cadre...heading to COS now) about what I read about the pedicure...which, by the way, is my fav mother's day gift from the boys....and I kidded he should show up with painted nails. I DO have 'bleu' polish.

Uh, that did not go over well...altho I did see a smirk as he mulled it over briefly!

You know I am good for this. I will send you a bottle of Weed if you paint your toenails blue for any FB game. You must wear flipflops for everyone to see that you are comfortable with your feminine side!

I will allow you to do a french pedicure with blue tips! I will send 2 bottles if you get an AFA decal on one of your toes!

FWIW, female candidates, maybe you could get away with an AF or AFA decal on your little toe!
 
Good thing about the Jeremiah weed,,,, if u don't drink it, it can be used to remove the nail polish.
 
Or strip the paint off your rifle... :eek:

The weed has the potential to make anyone...uh..I mean anything strip.
 
First visit you have with your daughter take her to get her nails and hair done at a nice place. She will love it. Any type of Indoc is meant to get rid of any individualism and make them all cookie cutter. She will regain her feminine side slowly after Indoc. It takes some time, but you will slowly see it re-emerge. I was the lone female on many deployments and my Marines after many months deployed would read my Cosmos, Glamour and watch my chick flicks. It was amusing as they slowly would try to hide them then after a few weeks they had no shame! My care packages were a hit because they new episodes of Sex and the City were arriving. They became obsessed and you could hear the talking about it at dinner! Trust me on patrols or convoys no one would probably know I was a female, because that was not the time or place. Once we were back at base I had no problem being me. It is all about learning the right balance, finding small ways to keep your feminine side and finding good leaders who know how to balance those things to look up to. It easier once they get civilian clothes.
 
Excellent post Hoops. And for those without a military background, let me briefly explain the purpose of the "Cookie cutter" indoctrination.

It isn't meant so that soldiers/sailors/airmen become robots who can't think for themselves. The main attribute of the military is "TEAM WORK". You can't fight a war, launch a plane, run a ship, etc... by yourself. Everything is about working together as a team. Unfortunately, when the first day of BCT, Boot Camp, Basic Training, etc... happens you have 40, 100, 1000 "INDIVIDUALS" who aren't actively practicing that level of "Team Work". First thing that has to be done is to not necessarily eliminate individuality, but rather to find "SOMETHING in COMMON". You have to take a kid from Alaska, Arizona, Texas, Florida, New York City, etc...; Some poor, some rich; every type of background from farming to inner city; private school to public school; 5 brothers/sisters to only child of single parent; etc... You have to get all these variables together and find something they all have in common and build a "Team" from that. And no; all having joining or being appointed to the military/academy is no enough.

So the easiest thing to do is 1) Make them all look alike or as close as possible. Shave all their hair. Give them all the same clothes. Make them walk, talk, look, act, etc.. alike. 2) Give them tasks to do that they CAN'T do by themselves and MUST work together. 3) Worse comes to worse, make them all HATE, DESPISE, etc... the instructor or process. Very common tool among Drill Instructors. Make all the basics despise you. Now, you have something they ALL have in common. Now you can build on that and make a "Team"

Anyway; just wanted the non-military folks to understand that the reason for non-individuality isn't because we/the military wants a bunch of robots. It's because in the beginning, most of these young people have little to nothing in common and you need to have something in common to build a team. They will all get their individuality back in time. Once they have a strong foundation of things they have in common.
 
Cristicorp...thank you for that explanation. We are not a military family and have heard condescending remarks from some family. We always let people have their opinions and don't interject. But it is really nice to understand some of it...it makes much more sense.
