DS is currently in Hawaii for RIMPAC. After RIMPAC, he flies back from HNL to LAX and then from LAX to IAD. Upon arriving into IAD he is on his 3rd summer block to come home. We live in California. DS already checked and they said that when he arrives in IAD he is free to go home and doesn't have to check into academy. Instead of going all the way back to IAD, can't he just take the 1st leg of the flight from HNL to LAX and not go to IAD and just stay so he can start his 3rd block?

What you describe makes sense. However your DS has spaciific orders to the contrary. That said your DS should know the person/group he needs to contact to have his travel orders changed. Changes with ship assignments/travel change all the time durring summer blocks. Somewhere your DS was briefed on who or what organization to contact in circumstances like this.

In my day, the option to go home from your debarkation port was allowed and you only got reimbursed for a portion of the travel. I believe Hurricane12 said there had been some changes...that leave from the debarkation port to go on leave wasn't allowed anymore -- I might of misheard or am incorrect.

It sounds like your son already asked the obvious question. I am not sure if there are "good" reasons for it, but it definitely doesn't make sense from a travel standpoint!

It all depends on your ship and what they say for that summer. Some let you, others don't. We were allowed to do this for PROTRAMID and I think people did it for 1/C cruise, but they don't trust 3/C I guess.

If he already asked and they already said no, I don't think there's anything you can do.

They are not allowing it for PROTRAMID this year. My son is home with us in San Diego now. He will fly back to Annapolis Friday night, and he will come back to San Diego Monday.

Sounds about right.

Edited to add: I wonder if they're making this an official, across the board change now for all summer training. I haven't heard of anyone yet who's been able to swing independent travel this summer. This includes one real head-scratcher: one of my former plebes lives in Hawaii and had first block leave. His second block cruise was in Hawaii. Guess who had to fly all the way to Annapolis, only to attend the departure brief and then fly straight back to Hawaii...

Thank you everyone for all the helpful information. DS did ask for independent travel and they said they couldn't understand why he didn't want to use the ticket back to Annapolis that was already paid for. He had to explain that it didn't make sense to go back and forth since we are in California. It was just too funny! He still needs to confirm with one more person...will keep you posted. This is such a learning experience! It is really testing my patience - in a good way:smile:
