non scholarship NROTC committment

My son is scheduled to do NROTC at a southern state university and we are hearing different information concerning the service committment upon graduation. he is non scholarship. What is the committment and when is the committment made? Thanks! :

The college program requires the MIDN to achieve Advanced Standing by Junior year which entitles the MIDN to the monthly stipend. The AD service commitment is 3 years. If the MIDN does not achieve advanced standing they are dropped from the program. The service commitment can be longer for some communities (eg. Aviation)

I concur although finding "official" documentation was tough. I did a quick search and found confirmation of 3 years active/ 8 years total at http://www.military.com/ROTC/1,15281,nrotc_scholarships,,00.html

Anyone understand it differently?

So Navy ROTC is 5 years AD for Scholarship recipient, and 3 years AD for non-scholarship...


Army ROTC is 4 years AD for Scholarship (of any length...4,3, 2.5, 2) and ?? years AD for Non Scholarship. Upon being disenrolled, the Non-Scholarship cadet, per Section 5a, owes 2 years of Active Duty service per this contract: http://armyrotc.missouri.edu/pdfs-docs/Forms/a597.pdf

That same contract says the AD commitment for a Non-Scholarship cadet is "for the time prescribed by Army regulations", but does not specify exactly what that is.

Time out for a second.

Please understand how the AD system works regarding PCS, promotion and TA.

3 yrs sounds great, but that should not be accepted as fact regarding leaving.

Life gets in the way.

I have 1 hand when it comes to how many left the AF at the 1st chance. I have every finger and toe, plus my friends appenditures when it comes to how many could not bolt. Life got in the way. Overseas assignments, PME, kids being born=paycheck.

PCS, promotion, TA are players. That is before you add in life, mtgs, car pmts, pre-school, etc. I forgot college loans too.

If you walk in with the thought that 3 yrs from graduation you walk out, than you need to plan it wisely. Career fields and schools for those career fields are tied to commitments. Also remember to place PCS into the equation.

To be fair Pima, the question was around "committment".

I agree there are exceptions like career schools, PCS orders etc that can jumble up the clear black and white committment requirements but wanted to provide gamom2016 with the "official" answer.

Some of the other life issues you cite are "choices" rather than requirements.

Every commissioning program and service contract cites a specific duration. After that, the finer details apply.
