'Afternoon, SAF!!!!!

I am a new Class of 2016 knob reporting for Matriculation at the Citadel in a couple of weeks. I am not on an ROTC scholarship, however my goal is to obtain a 3 year scholarship and contract/commission into a military branch. I am keeping my options open, so I am leaving any branch bias out of the door as best I can . I am wondering if it is possible to be able to compete for a 3 year scholarship in all 3 ROTC's. I am going to be initially enrolled in Army ROTC. However, is there any way I could inform the Proffessors of Naval and Aerospace science about my interest? Could I be in the running, for example, of both an Army and a Navy-MO scholarship? Thank you all very much for your help and I appreciate all insight!!

DS is NROTC at VMI..starting his 3rd year(sophomore). His evaluations for trying to get a 3 or 2 year scholarship are based on his PT scores etc and performance within NROTC along with GPA. The recommendations etc are based on what his commander sees etc so I dont see how he could be competitive trying to get a scholarship from a different branch when he has virtually no involvement with them. This is pretty much an educated guess as DS is not here to pick his brain so I am hoping someone can be more definitive.

Thank you for the info, that's what I believed (no involvement with other ROTC's plus different criteria for a scholarship, and that I'm sure the fact that one wouldn't be able to even take the corresponding ROTC course for another branch doesn't help matters). However, I HAVE heard of this happening before, so if anyone else that may also have any information on how this particularly puzzling-yet-very interesting phenomenon occurs, please enlighten me and any future SMC cadets on how this works. Thanks again for all of your help, and good luck to your DS, bjkuds!!!!

You should do a search of the site. There have been quite a few discussions in the past few weeks about competing for an NROTC scholarship while in college. Instead of competing for an IS scholarship, you can compete for a national one, the catch is that you can't be enrolled in NROTC when you do it. So it seems that you could indeed be in AROTC and compete for a national NROTC scholarship as a college student. There should be something about it on their website or you could call their scholarship hotline. Good luck.

Thank you for the info. Unfortunatley from the information I gathered, one cannot compete for the National NROTC college student scholarship if they already have more than 30 credit hours. I will be entering as a knob with more than that limit due to AP credit. Right now I'm looking at the possibility of maybe attending PLC over the summer if I do not receive a 3-year Army scholarship (in a perfect world I plan to attend airborne or AA school during the summer months anyway if I receive a scholarship). What are yalls thoughts on this? PLC seems like a pretty solid backup.....not to mention how much it will boost the score on my APFT.

at this point in time the Navy and Air Force only want technical majors, if you arent majoring in engineering, computer science, math or physics you're chances of a scholarship are slim to none. Even with the coming drawdown the Army is the largest service and needs the most officers so that is your best chance. Best of luck, your new classmate Alex Ghaffari is the son of my classmate and I also know Connor Rutledge.
