Now that A-Day has passed and the Cadets have their computers has anyone recieved an email from their Cadet? Our Cadet is in Squadron 25 and no Coms yet.

Yes, I have had several messages from my cadet, squadron 10. He was on his way to study after the first day of classes. Heard from him right after they got their computers on Monday too. There email addresses are: C16firstname.lastname@usafa.edu unless of course they have the same name as someone else, which is evidently the case in some instances.

Are cellphones still considered contraband for doolies?
How about weekends? Sundays? Can they call home?
We have gotten a few e-mails from DS and apparently, facebook, youtube, twitter or any social networking is not allowed.
We wanted to keep their official email strictly USAFA-related only.
Does that mean we shouldn't use yahoomail or gmail?

Phones are still contraband, though each squadron will handle them differently. Perhaps allow them for a hour on Sunday, or if the 4* do well on Knowledge test (K-test) SAMI, etc. Or, an upperclass might hand them a phone for a 5 minute call -- so answer any number still.

You can email them via gmail, hotmail, yahoo, etc.
Don't know if G-chat is allowed or not.

We have received emails as well. He is using both his USAFA email and Gmail accounts plus we have also received texts from his Google Voice account. His phone was taken away again after A-Day.

I have received several emails as well. Son is in Fightin 4th. No phone yet. He was told not to expect it until Parent's Weekend.

Cell Phone

We have received several calls from our DS. He called us on Saturday evening and we had a nice visit for about 15 - 20 minutes. He said that he only had a few hours in which to make calls that evening. However, he called us several times on Tuesday evening with questions as he was working through how to move his checking account from US Armed Forces Bank over to USAA. He called around 5 or 6 pm and again closer to 11 pm central. He called again on Wednesday evening with a question regarding a credit card. I have been surprised. I did not specifically ask him about this but it seems that he has fairly unlimited use of his phone.

Several emails (2 this morning) all though usafa.edu email account. All have been brief and to the point. I know they are all busy adjusting their class schedules, bought books, setting up printers, computer software training, etc, etc. No phones till mid October. No facebook till Parents weekend. He said not to give out his email account to friends yet. That must mean they all have plenty of pressure (both on themselves as well as the day-to-day schedule).

privileges vary by squadron

Parents --
Please remember privileges will vary by squadron for just about everything -- cell phones, Facebook, other media privileges, passes, etc. Try not to compare one squad to another, or bug your child as to so & so has his/her phone, why don't you, etc. MomofFutureLeader DS having his phone now is not the norm for a 4*.

But -- all 4* will get their phones for Parent's weekend - that is about the only sure thing.

Hi Everyone,

While phones may be a privilege that varies squadron to squadron, websites cannot be limited by squadron, but only blocked by the USAFA filters. Facebook and civillian email accounts CANNOT be limited by squadron staff. Note however, that video chatting is kind of a grey area. Media is also not allowed at the moment (video, music, etc.) but chatting with your family via email, social media is always allowed. If there is any problem with this, someone has gone too far in their leadership position. Do not hesitate to contact your cadet via civillian or military email, or facebook.

I'm almost tempted to investigate myself as to who has been telling them they can't access facebook or civillian emails. It's simply not within the cadet chain of command's right to take that away.

academania...my cadet had her phone for awhile tonight and she texted that she no longer has facebook privileges. She did not know how long she would not be allowed to be on fb. I found it interesting that she hasn't accessed fb from her phone, nor did she get on to let her friends back home know that she was not allowed to access fb. It seems as though she is following what she is told, without the Academy blocking facebook from a technical standpoint. Maybe things are different this year.

Actually they can limit it, and they did. And you aren't supposed to use government email for anything but official use. Media isn't allowed until recognition. They don't have to do a lot of the other difficult things that had to be done as of a few years ago so just think of it as a trade off.

academania,

The restriction on facebook and other social media came directly from Wing Training Staff and Brig Gen Lengyel. It is plainly stated in the Training SPINS and 4th Class ROE's that were emailed to the entire wing. This isn't coming from the squadrons.

Ha ha ha... Well I guess this is what I get for not reading the ROE's. Parents, sorry for the misinformation. I just found it strange because it's never been like this in the past.

Here it is cut and dry:
1.4.Fourth-class cadets are NOT authorized media prior to Parents’ Weekend, with the sole exception of academic use. This includes cellphones, any social media websites (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, etc.), video-sharing websites (i.e. Hulu, Facebook, Netflix, etc.), gaming consoles, stereo systems, and TV/DVD/CD/videogame use on computers. IAW section 5.6.1.2.15 of the CSP, Cadet Squadron Commanders (Sq CC’s) may reward fourth-class cadets, for a specific period of time, media privileges for outstanding performance. However, these privileges are restricted to the squadron area and do NOT extend elsewhere in the Cadet Duty Area as defined by CSP section 5.1.1

Still, this ROE doesn't say anything about Gmail, Yahoo, or other civillian emails. Those are still a go.

contact with cadet 2016

Interesting. I can email my cadet via his live account, but he tells me that he can't use FB until parents weekend. That is not to far off.

Finally got the email going.

Out daughter in S25 got her email working over the weekend. Apparently she was at the end of the list to get her account turned on. She is still super busy so her emails are mostly one liners. Like: "Spent almost $500 on books, same price on Amazon so just did it. Out"

Exactly, and that is incorrect about no media until recognition, it is until parent's weekend as mandated by Wing Staff, and then I believe it is squad discretion.
