Nomination Needed for USMAPS Appointment?

I am going into my senior year and am currently working on my application to West Point. How do I convey my interest in accepting a USMAPS appointment in case I do not get accepted to West Point? Do I contact my Northeast Admissions coordinator or my district coordinator?

Also, is a nomination needed in order to be appointed to USMAPS? Or can I still be admitted to the prep school if I don't have a nomination?

No nomination is needed for the prep school. I wouldn't worry about conveying your interest... the admissions board will automatically consider you for MAPS if they decide not to offer you an appointment. Your contacting a coordinator would probably be more of an annoyance to them than a help to you. My advice: finish your application, apply to ALL possible nomination sources you are eligible for (VP, 2 senators, and rep. and presidential if parent(s) are military), and then hope and pray for the best.

If you are academically qualified, you won't be considered for the USMAPS.

If you are 3Qed, with nomination(s), and didn't get an appoitment you will be considered for the civil prep program - attend one of the five miltiary colleges with a partial scholarship.

I'm not so certain that's true 100% of the time. I was more than qualified in every aspect academically (solid gpa and good SAT/ACT scores) and still got the NAPS offer. If I'm not mistaken, MAPS and NAPS operate in a very similar fashion. That may be true most of the time, but there are exceptions.

MemberLG is 100% correct.
You must be academically DQ'd to go to USMAPS but medically and physically Q'd.

I don't question your academic standing, but any idea what your final academic qualification was?

I have seen, for USMA, some kids that should have been acadmically qualified (based on solid GPA and good SAT/ACT scores) but were academically disqualified and offered USMAPS

My cc had a 3.9 GPA, 1800 SAT, 28 ACT, 12 out of 191 and considered academically dq'd -not to mention numerous leadership accolades, Nat'l Honor Society attended SLS, 11 Varsity letters etc... and offered MAPS. What is the academic threshold for recruited athletes? CC is at MAPS, re-applying to USMA (already been told not enough slots) therefore, applying to other colleges as well=Plan B, C & D.

I had a 31 ACT, 3.6 uw GPA (not great, but acceptable) with 5 AP courses and 8 honors. I got a direct appointment to USAFA, so I know my academics were fine. My best guess as to why I got offered NAPS is that I only received a nomination to USAFA, not to USNA. My point is, the majority of people at MAPS or NAPS are there because of academics, but to say all are is too much of a generalization.
