RIP Neil Armstrong- a hero for a generation. His "One giant leap for mankind" has to be one of the truly breathtaking actions of all time. For a little bit of time, as the Vietnam war was tearing us apart, Armstrong's landing on the moon transcended politics and the war- it was an event that was almost beyond imagination and made almost everyone truly proud to be an American.

He sure didn't let the limelight go to his head either. Smart, courageous, and humble. We could use a few more like him.

Snuck out the back gate at Keesler after curfew to watch the landing. I think the whole base was out there. A great Hero.

Dad woke us up to watch it live on BBC1...we were living in the UK at the time. He filmed it from the TV...

A great man we have lost

He reminds us that the United States is capable of great things when it is determined to do them.

Niel Armstrong, a great American. He did his job to the best of his abilities,
and lived quietly and with great humility the rest of his life.

"I am, and ever will be, a white-sock, pocket-protector, nerdy engineer."-Neil Armstrong

I still remember, as a young teen, sitting in our family room watching him step on to the Moon.

I was lucky enough to meet Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins at the the Air and Space Museum, Washington DC in 1976, an incredible group of American Heros.

This article by Daniel Goldin sums the legacy of Neil Armstrong and Apollo 11 well I think. Big challenge- to galvanize the country to support a similar endeavor will be tough.

NASA is filled with future Neil Armstrongs — outstanding rocket engineers, scientists and dreamers. I can think of no greater testimony to the entire Apollo team than to undertake another audacious activity that, although risky, will raise the American spirit and create opportunities for future generations. This next challenge will be the catalyst for the scientific and engineering breakthroughs central to the future vitality of our nation. We must reach for the stars

Interestingly, he was one of only 2 civilians (out of 12 total) to ever walk on the moon.

With his death, there are now only 8 living humans who have walked on the moon (the youngest is 76 years old).
