I was a little uppity last time I posted, for lack of a better word. I apologize for my actions. My question today is,what is life like at O-1 in the Air Force?

I am sure he knows what it is, he was commenting on the choice of that flag on this thread I believe.

This thread is fun to read, but more importantly to deshawn should be an example that the reason why nobody is responding to your OP was due to the fact that it belongs under the Life After Academy forums. That and how vague it was regarding the question.

Life as in what? Pilot, CSO, Intel, Maintenance, SP, PA, A&F?

Life as in how? Pay, housing, PCSing, socializing?

Life as in when? See Life as in what? ROTC grads even from an SMC can wait up to a yr before going AD depending on their field.

You can ask that broad question 6 days from Sunday and unless you give more information, none of the answers may be what you are looking for, thus why this thread has diverted to the level it has, funny, but still wasting space on the forum with no answers to the OP.

Whatever any poster may feel towards deshawn, the fact is there are many posters/lurkers wanting/hoping for guidance and information on this exact question. We owe it to all of them.

Deshawn,

Since you asked a broad based question, I will answer it that way, and hopefully you will realize you need to narrow it down to specifics.

Life as an O-1 is to report to your base on time, keep your nose clean and salute sharply, for doing that you will receive pay.

It is not what you wanted to hear, but that is all anyone can answer you.

Now if you are asking O1 Intel, you will get more of a specific answer, especially from posters like Nick4060. Grad school and hornet, eagle and CC. UPT, Stealth is your go to poster.

Our DS is going rated for him. His life as an O1 will be:
1. Wait 4 months to Report to Laughlin
2. Casual Status
3. IFS at Pueblo
4. Casual Status
5. UPT one yr.
6. Winging
7. FTU for his airframe
8. Operational
9. MQ Operational
10. Operational job in the squadron

By the time he hits number 7 he will be an O2 most likely, thus before he actually has a "job" besides flying it will be over 2 1/2 yrs. It will be 2 yrs before he knows where his 1st operational assignment will be.

One of his closest AFROTC friend is going to be a maintenance officer. She left last week for TX for training. She will be operational by the holidays this yr. at her permanent base. When DS is in his 1st job(permanent) for 6 mos, more likely than not she will be looking for her 2nd operational assignment since she would have 3+ yrs operationally and coming up on O3, just like him. That next job and the timing of her PCS will be big when it comes to her career. Time it wrong, or take the wrong assignment and it can be a problem for O4.

Do you see the difference? Her life in the ADAF is nothing like DS's will be, their paths and lifestyle will be different. The only time they will be on the same keel is when they are up for promotion boards. Maintenance and rated are classified as Line Officers, they meet the same board. Medical, JAG and Chaplain have their own boards.

If you want true answers to what life will be like, ask the right questions. What will life be like as an O1 at AFIT? What will it be like as a nurse? What will be like for Cyber?

What will it be like as an O1? Salute sharply and follow orders is the only answer I think anyone can give you. OH and that you will always run out of money before your next payday!

OH yeah, if this thread moves any further regarding posts it really should go under Life After because it has nothing to do with SMCs, unless he comes back and clarifies something tied to an SMC, such as chances of getting X AFSC, but otherwise if it moves forward to life as an O1 IMPO it could get lost in the forum, and the answers given will assist ROTC and SA grads too who may not be lurking on this portion of the forum.

Pima was correct in her response- this really does belong in the "life after the Academy" forum so I have moved it. Hopefully it will generate a few useful responses here rather than in the Military College forum where it was languishing.

A military battle flag?

What's the big deal?

Seriously. It's just a battle flag.

Right?

Alright folks- Either answer the OP with his original request- OR GET OFF of this thread. No more battle flags etc... IF you want to pick an argument go look in the mirror. Just in case you have forgotten- the OP asked:

I'm getting my information from the movie with Tom Kruse "A Few Good Men". Is that is what JAG like?
