Hoping to start an official thread for all students who are applying for an NROTC scholarship entering college in the fall of 2013. I thought this post would be a good way for applicants to see where everyone else was in the process, and what their status is.

So far for me, I submitted my application early this month with everything completed, and I am waiting to hear back.

Please post any questions or information you think is necessary for this thread! Good luck to everyone applying for this years NROTC scholarship.
 
Great idea!

This is a great idea for a post! It would have been so helpful to our family when we were doing the whole NROTC-MO process last year. :thumb:
 
Our younger DS application was completed in June and he is waiting for a response. Our older DS is beginning his second year of NROTC. He received his acceptance letter in September of his senior year. It is an excellent program!
 
His HS stats were 3.9 GPA weighted, IB diploma, 30 ACT, varsity CC and Baseball, many other ECs
 
jbrichmond, not to be Janie Raincloud, but I wouldn't concern myself with stats from 2010, there are way too many variables.

You are not only talking about school selection, intended majors, but also the applicant pool size.

I get you want to have at least a ball park feeling, but IMPO, for this thread, you are better off sharing your stats against current applicant stats, including school selection list.

A 30 and 3.9 uw awarded to Purdue back in 10/11 does not help you for ERAU for 12/13.

I am not trying to be harsh. I am trying to assist you in this process. Part of this process is understanding that schools, majors and yr groups are unique, and you should not gauge anything from a broad stroke, such as, stats. alone.
 
NROTC chances

Second Pima, DS was told by his NJROTC battalion leader that he had never had a cadet score over 1300 on SAT not get a scholarship...guess who won that lottery with a 1380?

The issue with your DS was Tier III... that's a brutal selection process for Tier III.

Exactly...I believe Pima mentioned majors in her post, just wanted to speak to some of the variables for applicants and why comparisons are soooo tricky. DS is currently on plan D and enrolled with Hoya battalion and trying to earn a 2 or a 3 year scholarship.
 
oh, one more thing

As the Navy requires DS' number three school was an in-state, the other four all very pricey out of state privates. Could have also been a factor.

You got it regarding my post.

My point was and is don't place any weight, time or energy regarding the stats for a scholarship recipient 2 yrs ago. ESPECIALLY if you are not placing majors and schools in the equation.

A 30 is a strong ACT, but is it strong enough for FY13 as a STEM candidate? We don't have that answer because we don't know the pool.

I feel that jbrichmond was looking for chances, and if that is the case, he needs to see what the pool looks like for FY13, not FY 11. There is nothing wrong for looking for chances, but it is important to evaluate/weight the answers properly.

Part of finding peace during this process is understanding the finer points when it comes to awarding scholarships. You can only find peace when you understand that FY11 scores are FY11 and not FY13. Do not use 11 as the OMG, I am safe, or OMG I am out.
 
Pima: I see where you are coming from and I apprrciate it. My post is titled "NROTC 2013 Students / parents. I am not chancing anything, I just want to hear from those who are in the same waiting game I am. I realize that every year is different, and I simply wanted to see who was in this boat with me.

I understand you wanting to see who is in the same boat as you, but you asked for their older child's stats and not the younger child's stats. The person in the same boat as you is the younger child, the older child's boat sailed two yrs ago. Thus, the reason why I and others have stated what we posted.

That being said, it is important that all candidates remember college selection will be a part in the decision making process, thus, unlike AFROTC where you have 2 big boats (Tech vs Non-Tech), NROTC has lots of little boats that will be your competition and you need to place that into your consideration when looking at the true competition.

For example:
You apply to:
ERAU
VT
UVA
UNCCH
PSU

another candidate applies to:
TAMU
Villanova
Notre Dame
Purdue
GT

The stats really don't matter because neither one of you will be competing for a scholarship at the same school. The list matters. I say this because just by looking at stats some kids will become concerned that they are not on par with other candidates, thus, no scholarship, and some will become overly confident that the Congrats letter will be arriving in the mail anyday now.

Neither belief is 100% correct. All that is correct is the school choices are part of the process, NROTC is not going to force you to apply to a school you don't want to attend, thus they are going to put that into the equation. Stats do matter, but to make an informed decision you need to place everything into that equation, if you don't the answer will be different.
 
Pima: you always have the most informative answers, I would have to say 90% of my knowledge towards these scholarships has come from you. To further what you said, I may add, if I want to change a school, then would it be a bad idea to request that change this far in the game? I like the school, but I have no chance at admissions for this #3 school on my list (GT). I have a better idea and one that I honestly looked right over that is much closer to home and will be easier to earn admittance too as a student. What do you think?

Jbrichmond, why do you think you have no chance of being admitted to GT? I might be able to help you there if you let me know your stats.
 
The problem I see for you regarding change is the reasons why you want to change the school list.

You stated it was closer to home and a better chance of admittance, not that I like the campus and the program more than GT. One of the reasons kids do poorly in college is because they didn't want to be at that college in the 1st place. College is not only academics, but it is your social life too. Your friends become your family there. You have to balance both worlds. If the school is only EH to you, but you placed it on the list because of chances, than be prepared to get the scholarship to that school.

I can't remember the poster here who did place a school on his list that they really, really didn't want to attend, guess where he got his scholarship to in the end? That school! He tried to switch it after he was awarded, but couldn't. In the end he was dreading going off to college.

The only way you know you have 0% chance of getting into GT is if someone on the admissions board has already said that your application would be an immediate reject. Has anyone told you that?

The only time that someone can say with 1000% certainty of you not getting admitted to any college is when you say I didn't apply.

The school closer to home is a great school, and I toured it recently. I would have no problem going there, the only turn off would be that it would still be in the same general area, and no change of scenery for me. Otherwise, I would love the school.

Well from looking at the stats and reading up, i feel as if i would be below the average for SAT/ACT scores and I know that GT is one of the most elite engineering schools in the USA. I second Pima in that if I dont apply, then i will have no chance; but i will apply. Any help you could provide me with would be awesome. Thanks
 
NROTC - nomination needed? 2013

My son's NROTC application should be complete in next few days. Is nomination needed ?
There's no mention on NROTC website but local recruiter said "yes"?

(He has applied to USNA also and requested nominations.)

No nomination needed for the NROTC Scholarship, I can't speak for the other branch scholarships, but I would imagine not. Maybe your recruiter was speaking of the recommendations/evaluations that the teachers must complete and submit? Or possibly letters of recommendation from other family who was in the service? All I can say is that you DO NOT need a nomination to receive or be a candidate for an NROTC Scholarship.

I am sure Pima or another very experienced/informative board member will be able to further explain.
