Do I need basketball?

Hi guys,
So here's the deal. I have been playing basketball since I was in kindergarten and it had always been my main sport. This past year I was one of two sophomores that made the JV/Varsity team at my school. The problem is I'm not so sure I have a passion for it anymore and there is a large amount of politics that have been driving me crazy lately. Best case scenario is that I would achieve a varsity letter and become a captain. I don't know if that would happen though. In 9th grade I also did track and field as well as cross country.. I have worked really hard at both and have gotten quite good. I live in Minnesota but I came up with the idea of wanting to start a winter running club at my school. This would help me and other kids continue to improve at running through the winter. Through this club I also want to do a charity 5k that benefits my school. I would be the founder of this club and also lead it. I also would continue to get better at track and better my chances of being a recruited track runner at the AFA. Some side notes are that I am ranked 3/606 in my class, all honors and APs, leadership positions in NHS and FCA and also hoping to be captain of track and CC. Do you think starting my own club would improve my chances over basketball? What should I do?

Well, if you show the academies that you can handle sports AND clubs/leadership stuff at the same time, it would probably look very favorable. However if your grades (or something else) are going to slip if its too much, then maybe not. I'm a junior and part of the varsity swim team, and I'll have to maintain president-positions in 3/4 clubs and a 4.0 GPA this year. So it's really up to you, you just need REALLY good organization (planner, siri :p)

So if you want take my advice take it, but here it is, you should try to do both, as this will show you are dedicated, organized, and efficient. However, if you truly think that you don't have anything to gain from basketball, then don't.

But anyways, best of luck to you and your endeavors!

I wouldn't do basketball and the club, I'm gonna pick one or the other! And nice sounds like you got a lot going for you, are you gonna do SLS?

Not for USAFA, I live in Michigan, too far away.

But if it's gotta be one (BBall vs Club), I would recommend the club IF you can be sure that you'll have a leadership position, otherwise it's just another club on the list

Yes I would hold leadership in it because I would be starting the club myself, thanks for the advice

If I was in your shoes, and I could handle the extra work of starting and maintaining a club, I'd go that route. USAFA wants to see candidates maintain physical fitness and display leadership. Continue to show your physical fitness through track and cross country and score well on the CFA. Then you can start your charity running club. Just make sure you're ready for the challenge! Starting a club and then dropping out of it because it was too big of a commitment will not look so good on a resume.

My sentiments exactly! :shake:

Alright, thank you for your input! I am confident I will be able to keep up on the club, I don't think it will be anymore of a time commitment than basketball has been!

In that case I think you have an excellent idea. Good luck to you!

Hoop: tangetial thoughts. Running outside in the very cold winter air may be damaging to the lungs. Talk to your track coach about the whole idea, indoor or outdoor. You need to be clear that's its an idea you would like to push but that a professional coach's direction on training is necessary. You and your school need to be protected any possible liability.

Yes that is a major obstacle that I have been trying to figure out. I have contacted my track coach and we're working together to try and figure everything out. I will do some research on the affect of the cold and running thanks for bringing it up!
