What kinds of gifts are recommended for high school graduates who (hopefully) will be headed to the Academy?

Give me your good ideas in the 100 to 500 dollar range, please.

- $100 - $500 deposited to his/her SA checking account.

- a black multitool

- cell phone with extra long life battery and unlimited text

- carryon suitcase/backpack combo

- a good waterproof wallet

For starters.....good luck with the SA appllication process!

1. Cash.

They seriously don't need anything expensive - not for a while.
Depending on what academy they will attend - there may be things they may want to buy to bring for the summer or academic year but these are not really "gifts".

For USMA there is opportunity to get gift certificates to be used at the cadet store. Anything that would qualify as a "gift" they probably won't be able to have for a long while.

They would always appreciate a nice watch. Not that they will be able to really wear them during swab summer (unless that has changed)...watches are nice. :thumb:

I forgot about watches. I am pretty sure cadets at West Point can wear watches during Beast. Just get a tough waterproof one - it does not have to be fancy. It helps greatly in identifying your own in all those pictures....

Watches are now mandatory during swab summer.

Rubber/plastic banded digital waterproof sports watches (think Ironman Triathalon-type) are on every wrist, a part of the required items to bring to R-day.

My daughter got a pink (yes, pink) Timex sport watch a year ago for about $30.
It went through MMI and Beast and keeps on ticking...
I would not suggest spending a lot of money on a watch for Basic. A plebe might like a nice one for the academic year, however.

I concur with LITS on a nice watch.

Citizen Eco-Drive chronograph watches fall within your budget, doesn't need wound or batteries. A few types offer CG orange accents on the watch hands & dial indicators.

Thanks! Cash and a moderate watch it will be!

I think that there was a real consensus on this one --- show them the $$$$$.

From a 4/c's perspective, I would say that a good watch and cash are really some of the ONLY things you can get them. Solid choices.
