My son is at USAFA Prep School class of '13 and is currently completing his nomination requests to his Congressmen. I spoke to him this past weekend and he was struggling with trying to figure how to get official SAT scores sent to his MOCs. As busy as he is with academics and football practice I'm trying to assist him. It is very confusing as one MOC has four digit code for Collegeboard SAT scores and the other two do not. I called their offices and they said they do not have codes and to "just mail in a copy of his SAT scores". Anyone else encountering same challenge?

Call the CollegeBoard for a fee they will send copies to your represenatives.

Thanks for the info jarhead. Found out it is $11 to get official SAT scores forwarded so will take care of that. Next challenge is addressing the "in person interview" that the MOCs require for nominations with interview dates in early Nov. Am going to see if they will take a conf call or skype with my son at Prep school for the interview. Preppies don't get off for Thanksgiving break until Nov 22.

Am I understanding correctly that, if you go through the process one year and you are deemed at least 'worthy' enough to be assigned to a Prep School, you still have to go back through the process the next year for a shot at an SA again? Is that the same for all the Prep Schools? Guess I thought if you got as far as the Prep School slot that if you did well there you'd then move up to the SA. Seems not! Thanks.

Yes, we feel like we are going through exact same process as last year when my son was in high school...very frustrating. It appears thus far that the nomination / appontment process to Acaedmy is the same whether you are in high school or at USAFA Prep School.

Yes, recruited for football. However, the nomination/appointment process appears to be the same for Preppie recruited athletes as non-recuited athletes (which seems fair and I'm fine with that). Our frustration is how the nomination/appointment process seems to be the same whether you are applying "Direct in" from High School or from USAFA Prep School.

I was on the phone with one MOC office yesterday trying to explain the USAFA Prep School concept and that my son would not be able to participate in the required "in person" interview in early Nov. They didn't seem to understand why he couldn't just fly in from Colo Springs for the day...

Thank you, that may change the thinking of the Prep-option. My son is a national level soccer player, but at the USNA and USMA he might be Prep-material. Not interested in the USAFA. He's not to keen on repeating the exercise if there is little material gain. He understands he'll gain a lot at Prep, but he may think its ok to take any SA that offers an Appt straightaway than take one's chances again the following year. It seemed to him he could view it as a 'red-shirt' year, but it appears more involved in that. Thx again.

That's weird... when I went throught USAFAPS (i was class of 08) they took care of all of that for us... All we did was take the ACT towards the end but even that didn't mean anything. We sent a letter to our congressman towards the end too and that was the extent of us "re-applying" to the academy.

I guess it's changed alot since I went through.

I am at the United States Air Force Academy Prep School right now and I can give you the run down on what is required and what isn't.

The application to the academy is waived, and Prep School Cadet Candidates are not required to fill it out again.

However, in order for anyone to obtain an appointment to any of the academies, you must have a nomination from one of the nomination sources. (In most cases a member of congress.)

The only work that must be redone is applying for that nomination and retaking the ACT.

If you have any other questions feel free to message me. I can talk to people here and try to get some answers for you.

Cheers.

Only because you bolded it did I feel the need to comment.

You will need a nomination for only four of the five service academies. No Congressional nominations for CGA. No worries, Congress will insert itself in everything CGA grads do, and no one benefits from that...

My apologies. It's not that I forgot about you guys. I didn't know that CGA wasn't requiring appointees to obtain a nomination. Thank you for correcting me.

The MOC interview will be done over the phone. They will set this up with the people at the prep school and your C/C.

No need to retake the ACT/SAT. Nominations only.

My information is backwards then. It was my understanding that we had to take the ACT again. Thank you for correcting me.

So, to restate the correct information, the only thing a prep school student has to repeat from the original package is obtaining a nomination. That is in addition to performing well academically, militarily, and athletically at the prep school.

nomination interviews

My daughter was a preppie last year. she was able to do her interview via the phone. Other preppies were also able to do the same thing.

DS was a NWP prepester last year and his MOC waived the interview. He just had to resend in the application paperwork.

I was wondering, what percentage of prep students end up at the USAFA? How many at at the Prep school this year?
