If you live in NY City and have questions regarding applying to USMA, please feel free to ask them in this thread. Might be able to help or get you to the right resource. Also if you are in the midst of applying and have questions - again please ask.

I have a question!

WHY would anyone from NY want to go to USMA of all places?

Sorry. Old habits die hard!:yllol:

Great to have you here! I hope prospective USMA applicants will take you up on your offer.

While I'm certainly not well-versed on the specifics of USMA applications or life, I'd be happy to offer what help I can to you and the candidates since I live 45 minutes from West Point.

I guess I'm working behind enemy lines. :thumb:

I live three hours from NYC....well 2 and half if you go 80 up the garden state parkway. I do have a question though. My ALO and BGO interviews were at my house, should I expect the same from west point?

While someone with more direct USMA experience than I have can give you a definitive answer, I would think it would be the same. I don't recall hearing anything to the contrary.

It could happen but don't expect it. While USMA has MALO's (Military Academy Liason Officers) they are mostly reservists. In many areas the reserve units have been hard hit by the War and there is a shortage.
While, West Point tries to interview each candidate - this may occur during SLS or an academy visit or a phone call - they have a difficult time getting to all the candidates. The interview is not a mandatory part of the application as it is with Navy.

Any candidate who lives 3 hours from West Point and is serious about attending should really make the effort and visit. At the end of every candidate visit is a opportunity to sit one on one with an Admissions Officer and have your file reviewed.

3 hours from NYC, more like 6 or 7 from WP. Im in Jersey, as low as you can go

WP is only an hour or so from NYC. If you're in south Jersey, you should be within 4 hours of WP at worst.

hmmm, googled it. 3 hours 21 minutes, I thought it was farther......my bad. Its like the same as USNA

HAHAHA! I meant distance wise, USNA is above WP iny my top choices though..... I havent visited WP yet though so that could change, but idk because USNA was beautiful.

All joking aside, you can't go wrong either way. Sure, in some cases one place is "better" than the other, but it depends on what the ultimate goal is.

As for beauty, it's been a long time since I've had a chance to visit West Point beyond the hotel inside the main gate, but it's just as beautiful as Annapolis, only........ different.

Trust me, graduate from either and you'll be set for life if you apply the lessons you learn there. :thumb:

Yep. October is simply a stunning month to be in upstate NY.

Too bad the other 11 months suck.

Zaphod - surely you jest!

New Yorkers crack me up! I, personally don't think West Point is upstate at all - I reserve that for Syracuse or Lake Placid - those from the City think White Plains is upstate though!

Upstate NY and New England are lovely. Wait for the first snow fall when the snow covers the trees or after an ice storm. Late summer is a wonderful time as well with warm days and cool nights.

WaMom68 - the weekend was STUNNING! The best fall for the Northeast in years!

Anything north of the George Washington Bridge.

Frankly, if we could just chop evrything south of the GWB off the state, it would be a MUCH better place to live. I can say that because I grew up down there and now live up here.

I don't know of one cadet at the USCGA from New York City proper...kind of strainge??

Flyer-

We live in Colorado and the BGO requested us to meet in his office and he wanted both parents there if possible. The MALO wanted to come to our house. It could just depend on the individual conducting the interview.

My parents live in Medford NJ and according to google it takes 2.5 hours to get to WP from there. We've always made better time. Hope you get a chance to visit the post. Our D's #1 choice was USNA until she spent some time at USMA.
